1. A healthier nation on the other side
...and employers who refuse to hire undocumented workers just to save a buck on ours.

11. I have always felt..
That the way to reduce the immigration issue is to improve the quality of life in Mexico. The people there are good and enterprising as a general population and they deserve help from the USA government to that end.

5. An end to US narcotics policy
That's the root driver of the mess... it destabilizes Mexico and provides both criminals and average Joses with a reason to come here.

6. Lots of good jobs in Mexico?
Less drug violence?
Is this a trick question?
I mean, I admit feasibility is a question here, but Rome was not built in a day, and the solutions seems clear to me.

7. Several things:
A zapper for all who want to fight over border issues because of underlying racism or nationalism. Cleaning the bugs off each day would provide jobs, and it would cut down on human over-population.

A healthy, thriving planet with global environmental and labor standards, fair trade policies, civil liberties, and a living wage, so that migration would not be based on socio-economic factors.

A peace, tolerance, and understanding virus whose lasting effects include appreciation for our difference

Finally, I'd throw those borders wide open, and allow as much coming and going as people want.

10. Amnesty for undocumented kids, pay a fine, earned citizenship for undocumented adults.
That's on top of other things - crackdown on US employers that hire and exploit undocumented workers, additional development money & programs for Mexico and other 3rd-world countries, designed to reduce poverty, escape from dependency hell, so not so many people feel they have to come here to not starve.

13. I would poof
1) Economic justice for Mexicans (and all Latin America).
2) Prison for a few employers of undocumented immigrants.
3) Complete legalization of marijuana to at least partially de-fund narco-trafficers.
4) Welcome signs for all the Mexican tourists after a thriving middle class has been established in Mexico.

18. I have a sincere question and welcome all thoughtful replies...
... because I am the first to admit that I don't know all the answers.

So,... Would a North American Union solve anything? Personally, I've always been against the concept of a New World Order.

My question comes from reading some of the answers in this thread. And, for the purposes of this question, I am choosing to go with the idea that drugs would have been legalized to remove black market incentive.

I'm also going with the idea that if the borders are open, they would be open in both directions. Americans can buy land, start businesses, etc. in Mexico and/or Canada.

So, how would open borders work? Would Canada, United States and Mexico maintain their own governments? I confess, I don't know how the European Union works exactly. Would it be similar?... Is this a slippery slope?

In light of all of the "illegal immigration" threads today, I wonder what the solution is. For me, I don't see how unfettered immigration can work if it doesn't work in both directions. I am currently in favor of legal citizenship, but I have sympathy for and personally know many people who are not here 'legally.' Likewise, I know people who spent the money and at least ten years of their lives acquiring their United States citizenship. So I'm torn on this subject...

Are open borders in both directions a solution?

All thoughtful replies are welcome.
