GOP asks high court to undo 'soft money' ban
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/feedarticle/9045592

AP foreign, Saturday April 24 2010

MARK SHERMAN

Associated Press Writer= WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican Party asked the Supreme Court on Friday to allow political parties to raise unlimited contributions, the latest outgrowth of the court's decision to unleash corporate and labor spending in federal elections.

The filing sought to undo the ban on the raising of soft money — unlimited donations from corporations, unions and others — by national party committees.

The GOP said the Supreme Court's rationale in January for removing restrictions on corporate and union spending in federal elections should lead to a similar removal of the restriction on such fundraising by national political parties.

1. Why not permit outright buying of votes?
Voting machines could be modified to print out little tickets indicating how you voted, and you could redeem them for cash down at Party headquarters.

3. Smells of desperation
RNC is spending money like there's no tomorrow - last quarter showed that RNC has $9m in the bank.

For 2010.

Doom, I say. DOOM!

4. They haven't enjoyed their standard 4-1 advantage for several years
And budgeting isn't a real strong suit for Republicans. Incumbents demand their big share of campaign dollars, no matter how safe their seat is, and in recruiting newcomers, Republicans are looking more and more for candidates who can be self-funding, like Carly Fiorina and Linda McMahon. So they have to reform the campaign finance laws by judicial fiat, hoping to find an activist judge or panel who will overturn the black letter of the law and the will of the people so they can get back to their standard graft and corruption.
