As the harshest winter in five years bites America's northern and Mid-Western states, the town of Quartzsite, Arizona, has briefly become the fastest growing place in the United States.
The handful of hard-pressed staff at the town hall can only guess at the numbers congregating at the camp sites lining the two-mile main street. They estimate that, last month, Quartzsite's population touched 1.8 million, eclipsing Phoenix, Arizona's biggest metropolis.
The new arrivals, known as "snowbirds", swell the resident population of 2,109 in an annual phenomenon that each winter sees millions of otherwise staid Middle American couples abandon their homes to seek adventure and sunshine on the open road.
