Sorry, but people who use 'spill baby, spill' sound like they're cheering it on.
Or at least cheapening the seriousness of it.

I know they're not trying to. I know they're making fun of the other slogan.

But this seems like a derivative of the old football yell, when someone's running with the ball and you're hoping he makes a touchdown.

"Go baby, go!"

I wish there were a better way to mock the oil drill supporters than this.

It sounds pro-spill.

Unfortunately.

It's a case where the sarcasm doesn't seem to work well, in my view.

Sorry, I know it's popular right now.

3. Wrong! Spill Baby Spill is the perfect sarcastic arrow to aim at the assholes who see nothing wrong
with poisoning our planet because of their greed and stupidity.

6. It's just that it's so much like a cheer in the positive sense, that the sarcasm seems overshadowed
a bit.

Believe me, I understand your point, as well as the passions involved.

But it seems that this was all predicated on a simple rhyme.

And it just falls a little flat with me.

Like I mentioned, I wish there were a better way.

4. I've only seen it used as pure sarcasm
And sometimes around here at DU, sarcasm is DEADLY serious.

5. You're entitled to your opinion...
but most people I know who've reacted to it understand exactly what it means, that it's a knock on Sarah Palin's "Drill, Baby Drill" phrase and they also use it as such. So I'll continue to use it despite your concern thread.

7. That's fine. But it's still a terrible thing to see in the written word or spoken aloud.
To me.

That's all I'm trying to say.

9. Today I used that phrase on my FB account and connected it with a map
someone posted here detailing how large the oil slick has become, where it is headed (which preserves) and what animals would be directly affected. There were quite a few people who responded very positively and were thankful for the information. Any new person who will listen or learn something new to fight for this cause of stopping any further off-shore drilling is worth it to me.

8. I'm trying real hard to see this from your POV
But I can't. It just seems too blatantly obvious to me that this is sarcasm at its best.

10. I respect that, and I respect you and your time and effort here.
I see the spoken word and the written word as powerful influences to thought and intention. When a phrase like this is repeated so many times, it seems to take on various lives of it's own. Well intended or not.

The passage of time will tell what this means and who had the better read on it.

I just don't see the repetition of this phrase as a positive.

But I do see the event itself as a huge eye-opener to a whole lot of people.

And that could be the big plus in this sad story.

11. Have you heard Palin ask "How's that hopey changey thing workin' for ya?"
I see this as the same thing. "I'll keep my guns and freedom, you can keep the change" is another one the RW uses as a play on what Obama has said. They have been chanting "Drill, baby, drill" since the presidential campaign, so it's fairly embedded in most people's minds. I see this as mocking Palin, et al, just like "you can keep the change" is mocking Obama.

I respect your sensitivity... there's not enough of it in this world.

12. Yes, and sound bites do count.
They count for quite a lot.

And this one may be picked up by who knows who, then used to make a point.

Which would make me feel somewhat better, I suppose.

Especially if there were tangible results.

Cheers, JL...

14. I see your point
Imagine Palin saying it instead of us. That's how we feel about her, big oil and offshore drilling. More "drilling" is always their answer with no concern for the environmnet and the fisheries of the coastal states.

Oil Spill Silences Once-Raucous 'Drill, Baby, Drill' Camp

By MIKE SORAGHAN of Greenwire
Published: April 30, 2010

"Drill, baby, drill" is now, "Hush, baby, hush."

The Republican battle cry that crystallized the growing popularity of offshore drilling has dropped from view since the Deepwater Horizon rig sank last week and the well it drilled started shooting crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

As Democratic opponents of the oil industry stepped up their attacks and demands for a sharp turn away from drilling, Republican leaders in Congress have slipped out of rapid-response mode and are generally holding their tongues.
