Arizona deputy shot by alleged undocumented immigrant, officials say

CNN) -- A sheriff's deputy in central Arizona was shot Friday afternoon by an alleged illegal immigrant, authorities said.

The shooting comes amid a national debate over Arizona's tough new immigration law that allows police to demand proof of legal residency. Arizona lawmakers say the law is needed because the federal government has failed to enforce border security with Mexico, allowing more than 450,000 illegal immigrants to move into the state.

The Pinal County deputy, who was not immediately identified, contacted authorities after being wounded in the desert, saying he had been shot by an illegal immigrant with an AK-47, said Lt. Tammy Villar, a sheriff's spokeswoman.

Villar initially said the deputy was being transported to a hospital. However, she told CNN affiliate KNXV that authorities had lost radio contact with the deputy and that a search was on for him and the

Also, from Channel 9 broadcast, the deputy will survive. His wound was described as a "graze" - from an AK-47. (Damn lucky!)

He said it was a group of 5 people, and was drug related.

It has to said. These are drug smugglers. Criminals. This is not a problem with simple "undocumented immigrants."

the seasons. You can buy rain gear and snow gear and light clothes for hot weather. We should be able to buy stuff to wear out in the stupid. It should come in primary colors and be reasonably well fitting.

2. I will admit to my gut reaction on this story.
I wonder if it's somewhat embellished or fabricated, in order to push and justify the new SB 1070 state law.

5. No arrest yet. The last I saw on TV, the helicopters were in the
air and searching for the group (getting dark at the time). I don't know anything about the shooter's status. It was the deputy who was shot, but only a graze.

6. According to one report there were "hundreds" of officers involved...

there should be a few suspects in custody, especially people with illegal hair or shoes. (cause there are ways you can tell, right?)

Course, with all the "border protectors" it might not be that unusual to see someone carrying an AK-47 in the desert?

These were drug smugglers, if they exist. Which makes it a toss-up as to whether they were American citizens or not.

8. More details... Sheriff Joe Arpaio has jumped in (of course)
A search and rescue deputy with the Pinal County Sheriff's was investigating a load of marijuana when he was shot in the stomach. He was working alone.

Authorities spent over an hour searching for the deputy, who was able to communicate via his radio. When found, he was sitting in the desert brush and able to walk to the helicopter.

Maricopa County Sheriff's have sent their SWAT teams to assist in the search. Sheriff Joe Arpaio was headed to Pinal County to assist in the investigation where about 70 MCSO employees were responding to the scene. Most were involved in a crime suppression sweep in the Maryvale area, officials said.

Following the shooting, Pinal County also requested help from the Arizona DPS (Dept. Public Safety), which responded with two helicopters and a SWAT team.

This isn't in Maricopa county. They should tell Bologna Joe to fuck off. If I didn't know better, I might think this was black ops. And if that nazi pig is involved in the investigation, I'm sure I won't be the only one to have such thoughts.

Pinal County Sheriff Babeu strongly supports Senate Bill 1070.

Arpaio is a publicity hog and couldn't miss out on this. IMO

9. Finally! A reasonable, sane comment

"Frankly this is just a very horrible story, but we should not generalize," Alfonso Aguilar, former chief of the U.S. Citizenship Office, told CNN's Rick Sanchez when news of Friday's shooting broke. "We should focus on the criminality of the drug traffickers ... not scapegoat undocumented immigrants who do not pose any threat to society."

16. Yes, they will... Fuel for their fire.
I expect to hear the most vehement, reichwing, rabid rhetoric regarding this event. The voices of reason and caution will be there, but won't receive nearly the coverage as the former. I think there's more to this story than we know.

Welcome to DU!

31. The deputy was identified as Deputy Louie Puroll, a 15 yr veteran.
Deputy Louie Puroll (53), a 15 year veteran, was treated and released from the hospital last night. Puroll suffered a flesh wound above his kidney that "tore off a chunk of skin."

"Villar said Puroll, 53, was attacked about 5 miles south of I-8. She said the veteran deputy is assigned to patrol the area known for drug smuggling.

Babeu said Puroll was tracking the smugglers, who left behind large quantities of marijuana.

Babeu said up to 30 rounds were fired at the deputy, who returned fire with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and a handgun.

Villar said the attackers were armed with long guns and at least one handgun. She said gunfire aimed at the helicopters came about an hour after the initial incident. An unknown amount of marijuana apparently handled by the shooters remained in the desert."

Manhunt Nets 17 in Ariz. Cop Shooting

(AP) Authorities have captured 17 suspected illegal immigrants in southern Arizona as they continued their manhunt Saturday for smugglers who they say shot and wounded a sheriff's deputy in a remote desert area 50 miles south of Phoenix.

Three of those captured overnight Friday matched descriptions from the wounded Pinal County deputy and were being questioned Saturday, sheriff's Lt. Tamatha Villar said. The deputy was released from the hospital, and was recovering at home.
