Any idea how BP will be punished for the oil in the gulf?

How do these things work?

I know they have to pay for the cleanup, but what would a fine look like? Multi Billions?

Will they compensate all the people hurt economically? Fishermen, tourism related industries...etc.?

How do these things work?

Can we FORCE BP to hire about 10,000 people for the cleanup? Can we create jobs from this disaster?

2. First...
...it's the comfy chair for them! Then we issue a harshly worded statement. Finally, we throw money at them to heal the wounds our vicious treatment has caused them.

Fishermen Sign On to Clean Up Oil

BP has said it will hire as many local residents as possible to clean the beaches and distribute boos through the surrounding marshes and waterways.

But I hope they have to pay for denying these people their livelihood, perhaps for decades.

4. Best model for what will happen
see Exxon in Alaska. Stall on lawsuits then have high courts throw out reasonable settlements so all the little guys get squat.

maybe a fine of several million, to be paid over a couple or more decades

10. Same way Peanut Corp, banksters, fraudsters and coal barons have been
at least- that's what they've been led to believe by this and the previous administration- up and until this point.

Could be that the worm's about to turn on that- though I wouldn't hold my breath

12. Upper management will receive big bonuses for their
hard work in cleaning up the mess the oil caused. After all, its not their fault. It's the people on the platform for not doing their jobs right. Right?

(I don't think I need a sarcasm thingy here, do I? They'll still get their bonuses)

13. Ideally, they're going to have to pay for cleanup and other damages.
We know for certain that they are going to be on the hook for cleanup. Other damages will be settled through lawsuits, most likely. Some suits may be issued by the government, "You ruined the wetlands, and you hurt tourism." Other suits may be issued by businesses and individuals, "You killed all the shrimp and put my livelihood in jeopardy."

There may be additional fines levied by the government.

15. they'll be fined billions, or even hundreds of billions
and then the fines will quietly be overturned, due to the cruel and inhumane treatment.

But their feelings will be hurt and they may even cry in public to convince us of their remorse.
