Dear Mr. Obama and U.S. Congress: Please hire hundreds of thousands of
unemployed and pay all their expenses to have them fight the Oil Spill. Please pay for the effort by penalizing BP and Halliburton out of existence. Thanks.

I think about fifteen dollars an hour would be sufficient plus supply room and board, etc.

(Could it work?)

2. It would certainly address critics that claim Mr. Obama isn't doing enough.
It would employ many unemployed for months/years and it would send a clear message to drillers. It would help clean up the mess although much devastation will occur. Win/win.

3. And especially those whose jobs have been lost because of this.
I expressed the same suggestion previously -- sounds like a perfect solution. I heard where inmates were being trained to help with the clean up. Fine, we need all the help we can get, but please give preference to those who are NOT incarcerated who need work.

8. BP's doing that...

small consolation when they've probably ruined thousands of livelihoods for decades.

BP has said it will hire as many local residents as possible to clean the beaches and distribute booms through the surrounding marshes and waterways.

11. That's great! This effort might take several years, these people need to have
long-term jobs if they want/need them. I'm really happy to hear this -- thanks! :hi:

7. I just wrote Rachel, and will also contact Keith, Ed, and Dylan, AND Janet
Nepolitano with this plea. I'll probably throw in Obama and Biden for good measure. And hell, while I'm at it, maybe a LOUD voice like Alan Grayson (since the spill is directly affecting FL, too).

I'm thinking if our "group of good guys" at MSNBC make some noise about this, it will get on the radar and maybe something might come of it.

I'm assuming BP will foot the bill for the clean up -- in their position, I think we have the right to tell them "this is who you're going to use". They're not in a position to 'negotiate', especially with all the info coming out showing how they were negligent in planning for such an accident.

13. yeah
The last thing I want to hear is how this couldn't be avoided.

I hear that again and I'm liable to lose my pacifism and start knocking some f'n heads.

The Cleanup:

There will need to be one person hired for each and every gallon of oil that escaped.

To raise the funds necessary, a brief tax on every barrel produced for a year may be enough revenue to get the job done. Then, when it is all cleaned up and each injured person restored, the bill would be paid for by BP, or the US government takes ownership of the corporation and all of its assets.

12. Excellent idea with one caveat
Great idea as long as the jobs go to legal US residents or US citizens and not as they did in Katrina where they hired illegal immigrants instead of the locals who needed work. And all the costs and pay needs to come out of the profits of all oil and drilling companies and especially from the retirement and pay of all their executives and not added to the cost of consumers. Remember the 0.4 BILLION dollar golden parachute of Lee Raymond of Exxon? http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/PainAtThePump/story?id=1841989
