May Day Immigration Rally Los Angeles - pics
Edited on Sat May-01-10 02:29 PM by Kadie

LOS ANGELES, CA - MAY 01: Thousands of demonstrators assemble for a May Day immigration rally on May 1, 2010 in Los Angeles, California. More than 100,000 people were expected to march from four directions towards Los Angeles City Hall to protest Arizona's new immigration law.

People make their way north on Broadway Street during a march and rally for federal immigration reform and a protest against Arizona's controversial immigration law, in Los Angeles Saturday, May 1, 2010. Activists said outrage over Arizona's controversial immigration law "awakened a sleeping giant" Saturday as rallies demanding federal immigration reform kicked off in cities across the country.

and tell her thanks. All but one of my nieces and nephews are American born and he has lived there since he was under two. All of them and my siblings and cousins could suffer with the Papers Please bill.

27. It got better this afternoon. I guess they decided it was more prudent
to cover the marches than the oil spill.

Listen, I wanted to show you this video of John Bracey talking about Haiti and how the East Indies were much more important at the time of the Louisiana Purchase than all the land that is now the contiguous 50. I love John Bracy. He makes me miss school. lol

12. No coverage by the MSM, blatant racism. "Take back our country" is what these people can
legitimately be chanting. I guess we have to take it to the voting booth for people to care, and withhold money. I live in Az. not crazy about the boycott call, but the only way to get attention is
through money. No one cares unless it is hurting their pocketbook.

25. They should hold up signs about AZ not following the Constitution!
Maybe they should dress up with 3-cornered hats so they'd get some coverage.

28. Thank you for the pix and the link ....
It is very impressive. In 2006 here in Los Angeles, over 250,000 gathered in different locations all over the city to protest the Bush Administration's abuse of immigrants. Kids walked out of school to attend and some teachers went with them. They blocked the freeways which was brave but scary for their safety to make sure that commuters could see what was happening.

This went on over a period of a few days. Then the city locked the schools down and started calling the parents to say that kids who left school would be disciplined. Teachers were told they would suffer job consequences.

The morning after that announcement at about 8:00 AM, I heard singing and chanting. I went out into my front yard with my husband and saw the kids from the high school across the way marching round and round the block before school started. They were cheerful considering what they had been threatened with and peaceful and there were a great many of them. I waved and my husband and I cheered and clapped. We were given bright smiles and return applause. Then along came a police car. They drove slowly down the street, the kids rounded the block on the sidewalk one more time and went to school. I have to confess that the old lefty in me came out when the police looked in my direction expecting approval. I flipped them off and my husband hustled me in the house.;)

My husband and I had discussed all during the Bush administration that we wished that young people were more activist, so as we shut the front door behind us I turned to him and said, "There. The kids are alright." I'm sure that there will be more marches like this one. I think they are one of the best things that could happen.
