Oil spill may spell trouble for coast's economy
Source: Montgomery Advertiser

Alabama businesses, from travel agencies to fishmongers, braced for the devastating impact of the oil spill spreading in the Gulf of Mexico. The expanding crisis prompted Gov. Bob Riley to declare a state of emergency late Friday. "This oil leak poses a serious threat to our environment and economy," Riley said in a written statement.

"With our natural resources, our businesses and our coastal communities in harm's way, Alabama can't afford to take anything for granted. Our state agencies have been working with federal agencies to prepare Alabama for an unprecedented environmental disaster."

In what appears to be a worst-case scenario for the River Region, one that still appears a long shot at most, the oil slick could force the closure of the Port of Mobile. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama imports many of its parts through the port, and its operations could be at risk. But both port officials and Hyundai say that appears unlikely for now.

<snip>

In Montgomery, David Scott of Destin Connection Seafood said the spill likely will destroy his business model, but he promised to stay open and find other sources for his products. The store's advertisement boasts of seafood delivered from the Gulf daily, but within days that supply could be gone.

1. If Gov. Riley actually gives a shit, he should consider changing parties.
This disaster is yet another example of what you get when you elect rethuglicans into office.

This event is brought to you courtesy of the Cheney and the chimp de-regulation of EVERYTHING, (with a little help from the Big Dick's greedy and incompetent cronies at Halliburton).

2. what a pity it takes those brainless thugs a travesty like this
Edited on Sat May-01-10 05:20 AM by northernlights
to realize that they aren't under gawd's special protection and travesties like this are actually possible, in fact likely given the infinite stupidity and greed of humans.

Now they are unfortunately about to learn the lesson that mama earth is finite and cannot clean up every mess we make, even with our help.

And of course the innocents -- the grasses, the plants, the turtles and fishes and birds and dolphins and sea otters -- will pay with their lives.

But this is beyond "changing parties." It also took a travesty like this for the democratic party's leader to wake up and re-think off-shore drilling, did it not?

3. did they have to hire a consultant to figure that out?
no shit sherlock, when oil rolls up on your beaches the tourists don't want to walk on them, they don't want to stay in some cookie cutter hotel and watch tv. When the sheen on the water makes your bathing suits turn brown, you sure as hell don't want to go in the water.

How about we go fishing for some of those delectible varieties? We won't have to use oil in the frying pans because the fish are pre greased. There go the redfish tournaments, the mahi, and kingfish tournaments. All of which add more money to the local economy than big oil ever does.

Hell, I figured that out and I'm not even a college grad.

4. I say lets go birdwatching
what better enjoyment of nature than to watch thousands of beautiful birds dying under gobs of black oil.

5. Birdwatching would best be done by helping to clean them up.
The ones that survive, that is. Many will be dead. :banghead:

6. "May" spell trouble? MAY?
OK Montgomery Advertiser writer, since you use "MAY" in the headline of your article, then most certainly I can expect to find at least one scenario that you will describe where indeed the coast's economy IS NOT in danger?

Because otherwise, I suggest that the correct word to use is "WILL".

I'm so sick of this kind of "journalism" these days.

8. This headline is a laugh riot!
Businesses along the Gulf Coast are completely screwed. Why are we still letting a British corporation take the lead in protecting America's coast, resources and economy. It is so frustrating to watch the federal government continue to point fingers at BP.

15. It could be worse. I mean Halliburton might have lost profits. Thank god that won't happen.
