Edited on Sat May-01-10 09:43 PM by spanone

3 Dead From Massive Flooding; I-24 Closed In Antioch

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Interstate 24 was closed at Bell Road because of a massive amount of flooding on the roadway Saturday night, killing one person.

About 70 cars on the interstate were submerged by the flood waters.

Two other people were killed in Stewart County from the flooding. One of the deaths was identified as Steve Zywicki, who died trying to save a woman from a flooded tributary of Hurricane Creek.

Two Nashville police officers had to be rescued after being swept away by water.

A shelter is open at Lipscomb University's student activity center, which will house 200 people.

after that building floats down next to the two trucks. About 54-56 seconds in.

That flooding is frightening.

14. A bit of irony, the clean-up of Mill Creek at Blue Hole Road
was scheduled for this morning by the Tn Scenic Rivers Assoc. For non-Nashvillians, Mill Creek is what flooded I-24.

17. Thank the FSM for DU

i got home, typed in "tennessee flooding 1-24" in google news and got zero hits. i had heard reports on the radio.

WTF?

thanks for the update, spanone

Did they find those kids who decided to daredevil the water? (If you've heard about them.)

I live further down 24. Watched the storms come in from the Western Bluff of the Plateau - wicked, but they split off when they got close. For a while, i couldn't tell the difference between the deep blue/grey of the mountains and the same color in the sky. It was freaky looking.

Thanks for keeping us informed and thank you DU for being somewhere I can always find out what I need to know.

Everyone stay safe, hope the worst is over.

39. We've been involved in floods, twice.
Once while living in the Shenandoah Valley we were in a 100-yr. flood. They called in the Nat'l Guard to help people get out of their homes. We lived up on a ridge so were safe, but couldn't get into town to buy food, diapers, etc. We had a 4-wheel drive and my husband tried to make it across a creek and just barely escaped it being swept away. I was NOT happy. Only one person drowned that I recall but there were a number of homes completely damaged and a few smaller ones by one of the river bend which were swept away. A bunch of brand new homes which had just been built were a total loss due to the damage.

The road damage was immense...a bridge which had been replaced numerous times due to flooding had JUST been repaired a few months prior and of course was wiped out completely. People who owned homes on the side were just SOL. It took more than a year to repair much of the major road damage, not including the minor roads (which most people lived off of).

Some people had flood insurance in town but many didn't. A number of them were very elderly and had their home paid for long ago and didn't have insurance. They were the ones who lost the most and had to move in with relatives.

You never think that 100-yr. flood is gonna happen w/in your lifetime but when it does it can change everything within a few moments. :(

My wife was there during the tornado that ripped through downtown. She was working at Brown's Diner at the time.

One day at Browns, KD Lang was playing on the TV and Chet Atkins was watching. He was reported to say that she's eaten more pussy than Porter Wagoner.

49. Is Paula still there? She's one hell of a gal.
My wife had a once in a lifetime encounter with Chet Atkins there.

My wife was the cashier there. Whenever Chet came in she would take his hand and walk him to his table. Chet looked just like her dad so she always felt close to Chet.

Chet had been sick so he hadn't been at the pantry for a while. During that lapse my wife's dad died.

One day Chet came in with his friend/doctor. My wife came up and took his hand. He felt so frail and that cause her to cry. He grabbed her and held her as she cried. He asked her to join him at his table and had his friend bring in his guitar. Chet was too weak to play, but he could sing. So my wife and Chet sat there and sang Beatles songs. At the end of the singing, Chet got up, took off his hat and walked from table to table with his hat out. That paid for their breakfast.

That was the last time she saw Chet.

My daughter is in Nashville for three weeks of training. She flew out on Friday to come home for a visit and is supposed to be flying back in tod. Now we're wondering if they'll be able to get her from the airport back to her hotel downtown.

To be honest, I'm surprised the airport is even open.

48. It's insane.
I just saw a report on television saying the confirmed deaths had risen to 7 from the flooding. The sad thing is they always find more after the flood waters recede.

My daughter's company at least decided it wasn't worth the risk to send them back in there today and are now waiting until tomorrow.
