The Official Announcement from the DoD About My Brother

DoD Identifies Army Casualty The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Spc. Andrew R. Weiss, 28, of Lafayette, Ind., died May 3 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Weiss was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. reality of what a waste of life this war is. Crap, I just got a flash of the creepy, sad, hopeless feeling that we used to get almost 40 years ago when you would hear about the death of a friend (or in my case an ex-boyfriend) that was gone. Gone all of a sudden, gone forever, gone for no reason except the deceit and lies of our government.

and thoughts for you and your family...:hug: The bureaucratic aspect seems so cold and harsh...but being a vet, I know how the Army and DoD make things seem that way. I do know that every soldier feels your pain to some degree. We fight for each other, we truly are a brother/sisterhood, something that is not apparent to those who did not serve. I guess that is why we keep so many things inside. May your grief pass swiftly, and although I know you will never get away from the loss...remember the good times, the warmth and the love. O8)

I've seen at least five of my former students go over to Iraq, mostly as Marines, and four of my best honor students right now are juniors in the JROTC program who sometimes express an interest in military service. I worry endlessly about them. They all deserve better than we're allowing Bush to treat them. You again have my dearest sympathies, Maggie.

at times like this.. Your brother is a hero... I wish he would have come home..i hate that he hasn't. It is awful..just awful. My heart is with all of you, and as a mom of a son your brothers age, my heart and soul are with your mother and father. I only ask because Weiss and similar names are often Jewish in origin. If so, and if you approve and/or think your would have approved, I could ask to have his name added to our Kaddish list the next time I go to synagogue. I live in Colorado Springs and will be home and will probably go to synagogue. Living in a military town as we do I'm sure the congregation would have no problem adding a non-congregant to our list. Regardless, please accept my condolences for your loss.

I'm soooo sorry for how you lost your brother. Andrew died a patriot and a hero and nothing can ever take that away. family and your brother. I wish I could meet you at Fort Hood, but my husband does alot of travelling and my oldest is disabled. I feel like you are me in a different universe. I went through that fear of losing my younger brother in the other Gulf War, but he made it home okay. I went bat-shit crazy, of course, with worry. I hate this damned administration for hurting people like they've hurt you and your brother and family. I'm stll hoping a time will come for them to account for all the pain they've caused.

Fort Hood, Texas. He returned from Baghdad in November after being wounded and will probably be returning in the fall. I am crying as I write this. There are no words. Just raw emotion. Tears and remembrances.
