2 inmates help save deputy's life

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/92606819.html

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Two jail inmates who gave first aid to a stricken Oregon sheriff's deputy are being credited with help saving his life.

The Multnomah County sheriff's office said the deputy and an inmate work crew were helping a stranded motorist in the Portland area when the deputy needed medical assistance Friday afternoon.

James Parker and Michael Smith began cardiopulmonary resuscitation with assistance from a 911 dispatcher and a doctor who stopped to assist until emergency crews arrived.

The sheriff's office said the deputy is a 25-year veteran but asked that his name not be immediately released while he recovers.

Officials say quick thinking and immediate action by the inmates helped save his life.

2. I'll bet there is a background part to this story--of humane, civilized treatment of prisoners
resulting in humane, civilized treatment of deputy sheriffs.

Not to underestimate the difficulties and dangers that law enforcement people face--they are considerable--but, hey, a little kindness goes a lo-o-o-ong way, as to helping prisoners feel HUMAN, and actually rehabilitating HUMAN BEINGS who are prisoners.

Interesting that the situation started off as a helping event--the sheriffs and the prisoners helping a stranded motorist.

4. That's an assumption on your part ...
Inmates volunteer for Trustee/inmate worker assignments and to be an outside worker is an honor job. Workers get extra privileges as in a day severed as a worker for a day reduction off sentence, can walk around the jail reasonably, extra meals, extra visits.....they are also housed in a Worker Pod with others who work as well. Workers don't get beat up because they help the Deputies is such a capcity....you only see that on TV. All the workers are in for minor crimes like traffic, petty thief, child support.....

5. Tsk, tsk. Shame on you for confusing us with facts
since we prefer to embrace cynical speculation.
