Attempt to override veto of abortion bill fails

BY JEANNINE KORANDA
Eagle Topeka bureau
TOPEKA —The House fell short of an attempt this morning to overturn the governor's veto of an abortion bill, but may try again Monday.

The bill would have increased the reporting requirements for late-term abortions. Senate substitute for House Bill 2115 would have required doctors performing an abortion after 22 weeks to include the exact medial diagnosis that necessitated the procedure.

Rep. Lance Kinzer, R-Olathe, said the changes would help ensure that Kansas' late-term abortion law was being properly enforced

The attempt narrowly missed the 84 votes needed for the two-thirds majority required to overturn a veto. The vote was 82-40, but could come back up again next week. Kinzer voted against the measure so he could bring it back up for a revote and allow missing lawmakers to vote on the issue.

Rep. Judith Loganbill, D-Wichita, said the bill was a "complete redo of the reporting requirements."

1. This bill, if it passes, will keep everyone so busy
reporting that there will be no time for care. It is silly, stupid and very bad. Lance Kinzer needs to go. He does nothing but this kind of stuff and object and stall everything else.
