And WalMart sells fair traded coffee under their Sam's Choice line (OMG) because a friend had it on their shelf in the kitchen.

Wal-Mart Launches Exclusive Sam's Choice Line of Organic, Rainforest Alliance and Fair Trade Certified Coffees

Wal-Mart today announced another first - the launch of six coffees under its exclusive Sam’s Choice brand. The new coffees offer shoppers the opportunity to purchase gourmet coffee at a great value while providing benefits to farmers, their communities and the environment. Bolstering Wal-Mart’s ongoing commitment to environmental issues, these first Sam’s Choice brand coffees hit store shelves in April at $5.88 for 10-12 oz. bags and are part of an Earth Month expansion of eco-friendly products that help consumers live better without compromising budget.

The initial Sam’s Choice gourmet coffees include Fair Trade Certified ™ House Blend, Espresso Roast and French Roast; Rainforest Alliance™ Certified Breakfast Blend whole bean and ground coffee; and USDA Organic, Swiss Water® Process Decaffeinated. All Sam’s Choice coffees are 100 percent Arabica beans. In addition, the six Sam’s Choice gourmet coffees are roasted by Café Bom Dia, a Brazil-based company that measured, reduced and offset its emissions to become the world’s first CarbonNeutral® roaster.

Too bad Target and others aren't doing this, and too bad WalMart took the lead............

1. Do you believe Wal-Mart's labels?
Do you trust that those who package the Wal-Mart coffee are really putting fair trade beans in those bags? They say they're certified but by whom? I'm getting more cynical about corporate America every day.

14. Designations of things like 'Fair Trade' and 'Organic'
Edited on Sun May-02-10 03:45 PM by Cal Carpenter
have been watered down to the point of being nearly meaningless.

They can't be done on that level (eg starting from grassroots) and strengthen to become the norm. The industries have too much power in watering down the regulations in order to maximize profits. And the power to spend billions a year on advertising, so we 'believe' in it.

At this point it's just another sector of the market, hardly different than the conventional stuff.

If there's any benefit, it's that *maybe* some of the food you eat has less chemicals in it. But even that is very iffy now. Particularly produce traveling long distances, from across the border, etc. So maybe you can feed your kids slightly less poisonous food if you are able to access it and buy it. but it doesn't do anything to address all the problems with our food distribution system - labor issues, environmental damage, energy and water use, quality of food, amount of non-food added to it, etc etc etc.... Basically having no control or ownership over the system that provides us with the most basic necessity. With a dozen or more people making profit on that food before it gets to you. "Value added" dontcha know.

It doesn't challenge any of the problems with our food industry on a systematic level. It's just another 'consumer choice' for those with the luxury to make it.

2. There are many places you can buy..
100% Fair Trade Certified coffees and other products...

I don't think I would have to go to Wal*Mart or any specific store just to buy that coffee.

6. Heinz has two HFCS-free ketchups.
Is "Ketchups" the correct plural? Anyway...

Heinz "Simply Heinz" and Heinz Organic are both HFCS-free. I'll use the Organic from time to time. Very tasty.

5. Other places sell fair trade that isn't private labeled.
WalMart's made a concerted effort to go after the segment of the market that doesn't shop based solely on the lowest price when it comes to food. WalMart wants to attract the people who are currently buying their food at Costco or in the natural foods aisles at the supermarkets. They may THINK they're attracting Whole Foods shoppers but their stores are too cavernous and unattractive to be much competition for the real money shopping at Whole Paycheck.

It's still the cutthroat WalMart we all know. They'll squeeze the fair trade suppliers just as hard as they squeeze all suppliers. How 'fair trade' is that?

7. Target HAS been selling organic, fair trade coffee.
Their private label is "Archer Farms", and I have seen organic, fair trade coffee under that label for years. Walmart is not taking the lead in this. They are the last in line.

9. I will look for that in the near future too.
I hadn't bought the Sam's I was simply surprised to see it and yes, as was said up-thread WalFart is cutthroat and will squeeze the farmers unmercifully to get what they want, which is at LEAST a 25% margin (I had to deal with them many years ago, I know their margins) which may be even higher today.

Poison.

But you are right - sugar is preferable over high fructose corn sludge.

The coffee is a winner though.

on edit: added - "The coffee is a winner though." and "But you are right - sugar is preferable over high fructose corn sludge."

Edited on Sun May-02-10 03:38 PM by Mother Smuckers
:silly:

by the way, I've made my own ketchup/catsup for years. It's VERY EASY to do, although it is
time consuming and somewhat of a pain in the ass to do...messy as well, but rocket science it ain't.
:D
