Let's call the oil slick what it is: Collateral Damage.
With no significant attempts at changing our energy excessive lifestyle in 30 years, and with so much deregulation and servile attitudes toward corporations there is only one term I can think of for the oil slick in the gulf: Collateral Damage.

Unintended damage, injuries, or deaths caused by an action, especially unintended civilian casualties caused by a military operation.

1. Right, It's like osteonecrosis of the femur head
caused by radiation treatment for prostate cancer.

2. Sort of - I am not sure the need to consume energy is on par with the need
to address cancer.
