2. a 40 buck fillup
I cringed when it was 30 bucks to fill up my car..now it's 40.
There is a chain effect -- food is getting more expensive along with everything else.

I agree, this is becoming a bigger hardship for low and middle income families.

really makes one go "huh?" while driving washington state.

Time to park the cars for good.

:sarcasm:

Get used to it. We will probably have record-high U.S. gasoline prices this summer.

9. Count yourself lucky. It's $3.39/gallon for regular unleaded here
Edited on Sat May-05-07 01:46 AM by mohinoaklawnillinois
in the SW burbs of Chicago, Cook County, IL. It's even higher in the City of Chicago right now.

I can't wait to see what the price will be May 23rd through May 28th, the beginning and end of Memorial Day weekend.

I'm figuring it will be at least $3.95/gallon and it won't come down much from that price once the oil barons know that Americans will pay that price.

What I'm wondering is how much my electric bill will go up in June. I'm on a budget payment plan right now paying $66.00/month. The "settlement" bill wil be due June 25th and I'm anticipating owing Exelon/ComEd at least $100-$150 even though I haven't even turned the AC on since last September.

26. Only $66 per month?
With our senior citizen's discount AND an equalizer plan (payments are equalized over the year, so you have no nasty surprises in the summer when A/C costs a fortune), we're paying $207 per month for electricity.

As for gas, we're buying the cheapest we can find, and it's $3.10/gallon....

10. Remember when W criticized Clinton about the cost of gas
and said how he, W, would just get on the phone and demand the price to be lowered?

I guess the number he dialed was busy.

13. Truer words, never spoken...
What would anyone expect, after all, weren't the oil and gas companies his largest contributors in 2000 and 2004??

After all, when he was in the "oil bidness" didn't he drill nothing but dry holes in West Texas and then get bailed out by Poppy's friends?

Don't even get me started, the American people really bought a "pig in a poke" in 2000 & 2004.

They fell for his BS, big time. I'm just wondering when those "security moms" and "moral values" voters will wake up and realize how duped they were.

IMHO, its May, 1929 all over again and the clock is ticking.....

14. Just wait ... if the Saudi oil fields are attacked, they'll all be parked....
$6/gallon gas could be the norm for quite a while.

The price of everything will skyrocket.

You will see lots of cars parked.

16. Years from now gasoline will be in "short supply", so they want
us to get used to high prices now, so it won't be so much of a shock when it happens. It's for our own good.

And there's not a damn thing we can do about it. It sure takes the fun out of eating when you never know if you're eating something that's been tainted with something that can be harmful perhaps deadly. Not to mention how much the cost of the crappy food has gone up right along with the cost of gas.

24. I'm of two minds about this
Sure, it's going to hurt me. I have a limited income, and live in one of those towns where public transportation is not optimal. I need my car just to buy a quart of milk, let alone get to work/appointments. I can't afford to buy a hybrid, so I need to keep pouring gas in the 15 year old guzzler. I'm already combining errands to conserve. My utility rates are going to soar.

But maybe this will be the wake-up call we need. Fossil fuels are limited: we can't afford to squander them. Maybe when it costs over a hundred bucks to fill-up the Hummer, people will re-think whether they need an armored tank to get to the gym. Maybe American car manufacturers can start making automobiles as fuel-thrifty as the rest of the world does. Maybe we'll be forced to develop better public transportation. Maybe the costs of heating and cooling the McMansions will force us to start building smaller, more energy efficient quarters. Maybe the corner market will make a come-back. Maybe - in short - we'll start to live more like Europeans and less like drunken lottery winners.

And by my standards, Europeans live very well indeed.

28. A saber rattling administration doesn't help
Every time there's a major story about possible war with Iran, oil prices go up because of instability. The same goes for every time Hugo Chavez threatens an embargo because we continue to piss him off despite the fact that he isn't a threat to US National Security.

We should have listened to Jimmy Carter 30 years ago.

29. Amen
It's not the price of oil going up that ticks me off, so much as the thought that the money is going to the wrong people. We should be using those profits to develop ways of lessening our dependence on fossil fuels and improving the safety net for those most adversely effected. As it is, I fear it's just going to line the pockets of The Usual Suspects.
