Chavez rockets to No. 1 on Twitter in Venezuela

By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER
The Associated Press

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez is tops on Twitter in Venezuela less than 2 weeks after launching his account, surpassing Internet-savvy foes who dominate the social networking site and use it to oppose him.

Chavez's account, "chavezcandanga," had racked up more than 237,000 followers as of Saturday morning - besting the 234,000 who receive tweets from Globovision, the only TV channel that remains critical of the socialist leader.

In recent televised appearances, Chavez has trumpeted the meteoric rise of his Twitter popularity while downplaying the critical, often disparaging messages he receives.

"Some criticize me, others insult me. I don't care," he said. "It's a form of contact with the world."

1. FYI, Hugo: A free press is also a good "form of contact with the world." nt

Many of which oppose the current administration.

7. I don't know why people continue to post this bs over and over.
If any of our news outlets host a coup against our president, I hope they all not only go off the air, I hope they all go to jail.

...Tightens Grip On Judiciary

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at a World Climate Change Conference at the Feliz Capriles stadium in Cochabamba, Bolivia on April 22, 2010

Judges are under threat in Venezuela as President Chavez increases pressure on the judiciary to toe the government line. An independent-minded judge, Maria Lourdes Afiuni, finds herself facing corruption charges for ordering the release of a former banker who ran afoul of the government.

In a move that has drawn criticism as an attack on judicial independence in Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez has jailed a criminal court judge. Her transgression, critics of Chavez say, was straying too far from what the government wants.

More World News Human rights groups say the independent-minded judge, Maria Lourdes Afiuni, was jailed on trumped-up corruption charges after she allowed the release of a former banker who had once benefited from his ties to the government."

16. So an activist judge gets jail because she released
a corrupt banker, and this bothers you? Geez, seems they're ahead of the curve compared to USA since we can't even seem to get our government to hold bankers accountable much less jail them for the fraud and corruption they perpetrated.

If I were Venezuelan I'd love it that Chavez removed a judge that was aiding and abetting corrupt bankers at this point.

18. Riiiight, practice what you preach you'd be pissed to high heaven if even Obama pulled such a stunt
as disassembling America's judiciary you do know you're playing into Frank Gaffney's hands, right? Cept his, ahem, spin, is that Obama is bringing Sharia Law to America as has been incrementally elsewhere http://catholicknight.blogspot.com/2009/05/breaking-obama-appointee-advocates.html If we're searching for a home team ahead of the curve when it comes to ferreting out the corrosive forces of "our government" then why doesn't DU just go ahead and endorse the Taliban

19. WTF are you ranting about? The only part of your post that
makes any sense is the comment about being pissed if Obama "pulled such a stunt," which to be honest I would not. If Obama tomorrow decided that the five judges who broke with long standing precedent regarding corporations' personhood needed to be removed from office and replaced.... I'd be thrilled!

(Reuters) - Venezuela's Hugo Chavez may have recently discovered the joys of "tweeting," but now he is finding that Twitter can also have drawbacks for presidents.

The Latin American country's loquacious leftist leader launched himself onto the micro-blogging site last week to counter opponents who have increasingly been using it to pour scorn on his government.

His account, @chavezcandanga, drew nearly a quarter of a million followers -- many of them presumably curious whether the former paratrooper famed for his hours-long speeches could adapt to Twitter's 140-character limit.

But now he has been overwhelmed with responses and has hired 200 people to help him respond to the more than 50,000 messages he says he has received in just nine days.

"This is more work for me because I can't stop replying," he said during a lengthy televised speech late on Friday. "So I've taken a decision, such is the avalanche of messages."

6. Yes, he is a man of the people. I wish we had a few here.
He stopped the exploiters from using his people as cheap labor, an unforgivable sin in the eyes of those who don't believe in sharing the resources with others.

I hope he does stay in office for years to come. And all the other progressive leaders in South America who have been chosen by their people who suffered for far too long under the brutal dictatorships supported sadly by the U.S.

I always wondered why this so-called democracy supports brutal dictators, and condemns people like Chavez. But that was before I began to realize who really runs this country no matter which party is in power. After Kerry ignored the tens of thousands of people who asked him to speak out about the coup attempt by the U.S. in Venezuela, I began to finally understand that the Democrats would not be that much different than the Republicans.

I hope he has lots of fun on Twitter ~ I love it that he says he can't stop! Lol!

One only does that when one has facts.

After the initial juvenile insult, unless there is some Propaganda to Copy/Paste, there is no ammunition left to fire.

That's when the Crickets get sent to work, or more sand is thrown around the sandbox via more juvenile insults.

Boring, really.
