Girl: I Was Punished For Having 2 Moms: Parents Plan Suit Against Rio Rancho Schools
Girl: I Was Punished For Having 2 Moms: Parents Plan Suit Against Rio Rancho Schools

May 8--Jenna Bissell says she sat in her fifth-grade class for hours with a gash on her face, dried blood between her loosened permanent teeth, cut lips and a swollen nose.

She had tripped on the playground.

But Bissell says her teacher never asked about her injuries or sent her to the nurse. Her parents were never called. And Bissell believes she was treated this way because her parents are lesbians.

"I think it started because my moms are gay," Bissell said Friday.

Bissell's parents are preparing to bring a civil rights suit against Rio Rancho Public Schools, where Bissell attended Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School. The family has since moved her to another school, where they say she is earning A's and B's and making friends.

2. Rio Rancho ( New Mexico) is the city that contracted with a private trash hauler
to service residents, rather than operate its own public service department, then hauled residents off to jail if they had a disagreement with the the private trash hauler and refused to pay the bill. I kid you not. Just one of my 1825 (5 years X 365 days) amazing New Mexico stories.

3. This is why it bothers me when straight children of gays are called "allies."
Edited on Sat May-08-10 05:23 PM by pnwmom
The term doesn't recognize how affected these children are by growing up in gay families (in every way, positive and negative); it is as much a part of them to have been "raised queer" as it is for their parents to be gay. And yet many can feel they're fully accepted by neither the straight nor the gay communities.

4. Sickening, but not terribly surprising for Rio Rancho
a bedroom community sort of suburb of Albuquerque. Lots of fundies there.

5. My cousin had two Moms
back in the 1950s in NYC. He never said he had any problems with it. In fact, I as a kid used to dream of running away from my "traditional" married parents and going to live with him.

I worked a few years ago on LI where a number of kids in the school had two Moms. It was never a big deal. BOTH Moms used to come into the classroom for parent activities.

It's not Utopia anywhere to be sure, but it seems some places are far more accepting of differences than others.
