U.S. Jews 'proud' of Obama Supreme Court nominee
<snip>

"The expected nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan represents is a proud moment for the U.S. Jewish community as well as a landmark in gender equality, the National Jewish Democratic Council said Monday.

President Barack Obama was poised on Monday to nominate Solicitor General Elena Kagan for the U.S. Supreme Court, choosing a moderate who may not spur a damaging political fight in a congressional election year.

In their statement Monday, the NJDC said that Kagen’s nomination represented "an important step forward as women continue to take their rightful place on our nation’s highest court, as her confirmation would bring us to the historic precedent of three women seated on the Court at the same time."

"As American Jews, we also take special pride in seeing another member of our community nominated to the highest court in the land," the NJDC added, saying that it "look forward to an expeditious and fair confirmation hearing, and a speedy and successful confirmation vote in the full Senate before the Court convenes in the fall."

1. Sure would be nice to see and atheist on the Court

It is not even close to representative of the country as a whole. Ethnicity is pretty close; gender getting closer; religion is way out in far right field.

on edit: strike atheist, make that "Deist" and then you can have someone as religious as Jefferson.

2. lots of Jews are atheists
I don't pretend to know anything about this nominee's religious views, but plenty of ethnically-Jewish folks are atheistic or agnostic. Given that I've seen pictures of her without her hair covered, I'm guessing at the very least she's not Orthodox...

4. Do you think that all whites consider themselves to be in the same ethnic group?
Racial group, yes, but ethnic group?

6. They get categorized that way now
For example, Italians are not singled out as much as they once were. Even though Alito told us he was very attuned to prejudice because of his Italian ancestry.

Also, on this year's census form, you aren't Polish, or Irish, or Italian; if your forebears came from Europe, you are "white".

8. Well, I don't see myself as one ethnic group with other Europeans.
Prejudice against white ethnics is minimal now, but my heritage isn't in Italy or Poland. And I'm Protestant.

The census also doesn't distinguish among the different Latin American or Asian countries, either, but I would bet that most people who are Latin American also identify with a particular country or countries.

10. Latin America, no, but Asian, yes
Last time I looked, they had Vietnamese, Cambodian, Korean, Japanese, etc., but you are right, Mexican, Panamanian, Uruguayan, Venezuelan, anyone who speaks Spanish are all the same -- "Hispanic".

3. Being Jewish, I feel that I can reasonably call that a crock of crapola...
I would be more thrilled if the nominee were not Jewish, but very progressive....

5. More grist for the mill.
If it's not her suggested sexual orientation, then it is her religion. There will be plenty of "Maleks" crawling out of the woodwork.

9. And the Jewish vote is a constituency the GOP would like.
Man, their stalling techniques should go over well with the Jewish community.
