Phoenix: $90 million at risk because of immigration fallout
Phoenix may be on the verge of losing hotel and convention center business worth about $90 million over the next five years because of fallout from Arizona's new immigration law, a top city official said.

The list includes four organizations that have canceled events, in addition to more than a dozen other groups that have expressed concerns about the new law.

Those "watch list" events impact city run venues, such as the Phoenix Convention Center and the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel, as well as hotels and resorts around the city.

"We have an image and public relations problem of what might be unprecedented proportions," Krietor said.

2. Take heart, Phoenix
Maybe the Aryan Nations will want to book a big convention in town. I'd advise you to get a sizable advance deposit on any reservations they might make, though.

7. I like Phoenix. I would love for this to be over and people do the
right thing. Poor good guys in Arizona. This must be awful.

8. The pressure makes their case easier to make.
If they can unload these jerks, it will be worth it.

4. in their grand march to a PURE society, they forget to remember that most of us aren't
what'd you call 'racist'. Sure, people may not understand different cultures or be annoyed by them, let's be honest, but racism to me is the direct intent at trying to exclude someone from living by you, causing them grief, keeping from hiring them, talking negatively about them to others who know them, etc... and for all their wise ways (lol) did they not even THINK for one second that millions of dollars a month would be lost in tourism/business??????

Because that was the 1st thing I thought about after thinking how racist it sounded... those teaklanners sure don't look ahead.

5. Remind me to care

Arizona has made it clear they don't want outsiders. Why not just respect that. If they don't want outsiders, they don't get them. Oh well.

9. Meh
$18 million/year "threatened"? If services for undocumented workers are costing them more than that each year, they still come out ahead. And five years is a long time for people to remember their outrage.

10. Their hotels will take a beating from this.
It's the pensioners who move there who love this right wing stuff, but they don't bring any money to the big hotels. They fill RV parks, trailer parks, and subdivisions of small homes.

This is going to be a PR disaster for Arizona, and the people who will pay most dearly are those with businesses which depend on convention and tourist trade and those citizens who work at factories which export goods to Mexico.
