A schoolteacher has been fired after she brutally attacked a 13-year-old pupil in front of a classroom full of students, according to US reports.

Shocking video footage appears to show Sheri Davis dragging, kicking and slapping sixth grader Isaiah Johnson after squaring up to him as he cowered in a corner.

The alleged beating is thought to have lasted almost a minute and was filmed on a mobile phone by another pupils before being posted on YouTube.

Officials at Jamie's House Charter School, a centre for children with disciplinary issues in Houston, Texas, are reportedly 'horrified'.

The 40-year-old teacher has been sacked and bosses have apologised to the youngster and his furious mother, Alesha Johnson.

Police have been called in to investigate amid public outcry, which came after the video was obtained by Ms Johnson and aired on Houston's Fox News channel.

not monsters.
Everything indicates that parents just dumped their kids in a segregated class with other kids that have the same issues taking away their responsibilities.

A Harris County charter school teacher caught on video beating up a student last month could face criminal charges, but she will not lose her teaching certificate.

That's because Sheri Lynn Davis, 40, doesn't have one.

As a science teacher at a charter school, she didn't need to be certified. Texas law requires charter schools to hire certified teachers only in the areas of bilingual and special education.

The state's charter school law is designed to give the campuses more freedom in hiring, but Davis' case illustrates a little-discussed loophole: If teachers aren't certified by the state, then the state has no power to sanction them. Their records are clean if they apply for other teaching jobs. In fact, they don't have a record at all with the State Board for Educator Certification.

18. Each year 253,000 teachers are threatened with injury in the U.S.A.
127,500 are physically attacked by students.

Violence against teachers costs over $2 billion annually. Not only are the teachers damaged by the threats but also students that observe the threats of violence.

Threats Against Educators are Expensive
Each year, students threaten teachers and even assault them. What are the costs for this behavior?

•Lost wages
•Lost days of work
•Need to train and replace teachers who leave prematurely
•Lost instructional time
•Medical and psychological care
•Student disciplinary proceedings
•Increased workers’ compensation claims and premiums
•Incarceration of perpetrators <1>
Teachers are already leaving the field because of burn out, poor work environment and lack of support from parents and administrators. Violence from students only adds to the already existing problem.

Locations for Violence Against Teachers
Just where is the violence occurring? Where are the 7%?

•Cities – 109,800
•Suburbs – 78,100
•Towns – 27,500
•Rural areas – 37,700
•Secondary schools – 139,400
•Elementary schools – 113,700
•Male teachers attacked – 78,500
•Female teachers attacked – 174,500
The pattern seems higher incidents in an urban setting, in secondary schools and with female teachers.

Congratulations. You have moved from pathetic to psychopathic excuses for terrible behavior.

Again, I have worked with schools full of students with severe emotional, psychological and legal problems and I have never had to resort to violence against a student. Your "statistics" are nothing but ex post facto excuses for your willingness to accept abuse in the classroom.

38. Actually, it looks to me like a higher incidence in rural settings -
considering the higher populations in urban settings you'd expect higher numbers, but with rural incidents being 1/3 the number of city incidents and city schools encompassing well over three times the number of students in rural schools, the rate of incidents would be higher in rural schools.

Of course, I could be wrong on the ratio of urban v rural students - I don't have them right at hand - but IIRC city/suburban schools have nearly 4x the number of total students of small town/rural schools.

20. And more violence will really help those kids. I have worked with kids that get violent.
Being calm is the best thing you can do for them. I had a 12 year old go off on me, trying to kick and punch me. I was taught how to restrain kids when they get like this. I calmly restrained his arms, pinned them against his chest and then stayed like that for a long time. The boy calmed down. We actually got along very well after that. These children don't need any more adults going at them. They need trust.

30. yeah... I have NEVER seen teachers of kids justify this violent
behavior. Besides, the violence was done in a very ineffective way, the teacher put herself at greater risk turning her back to the other students like that... she could have really been attacked by several other bigger kids, and injured.

Very bad on all levels.

Several alternatives to deal with this situation, and good teachers would know many.

Not excusing what the teacher did, by any means, but it didn't occur in a vacuum. And nobody is better at pushing buttons than a middle-school kid.

I was once picked up and bodily thrown out of the classroom by my social studies/wrestling coach teacher. Can't say I blame him - I was being a wiseass - but those were different times. But even then, wailing on a kid for over a minute was unheard of.

She needs to find herself a different profession.

It could have been the moment when the teacher took control of the room, by leaving the child alone in the corner.

Actually, the kid just learned another lesson in what life will be like once we deregulate every field and let any yahoo do any job.

Just like today's prison guards, tomorrow's teachers will be unqualified, mentally unstable, socially maladjusted abusers.

Open season, no restraint, beat up on your fellow human beings as long as you're the one in charge...good lesson
