New Trier student held until lawyer can provide passport

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Although an anonymous donor has agreed to pay the $50,000 bail to free a north suburban high school student charged in a hit-and-run crash, she will not be released until her lawyer can provide a valid passport, the sheriff's office announced Tuesday night.

....

Hughes is charged with failure to report an accident involving personal injury, failure to give information or render aid and failure to exercise due care.

The victim was Sarah Goone, 16, a fellow New Trier student. Goone is in critical condition at Evanston Hospital.

A judge set her bail at $500,000, citing an alleged confession to police that she had smoked marijuana the night before the incident. Levin said her activities the night before are irrelevant.

6. Flee to where?
Nothing in the article states that she is from another country. Or has connections to one.

3. I don't know...is she a flight risk or something?
Will the court take possession of the passport so this girl can't leave the country?

5. Another journalist(so-called)who failed to get more than the...
most minimal info before rushing into the newsroom. Driver was 18. Failed completely to comply with the laws before rushing off. Why the anon. bail?

A pot smoker hit and run...and our folks here say it won't happen if legalized. LOL!

This story needs more info.

4. Seems reasonable while they wait to see if the charges get upgraded
to vehicular manslaughter. You don't leave the scene of an accident when you are involved. Especially if there are injuries.

I'm glad to note there appear to be no charges filed related to the alleged night-before pot smoking, although I'm not sure why the judge cited this in setting bail. The amount is reasonable enough without invoking drug war hysteria.
