8. They represent that type of racism that is publicly endorsed and supposedly treated as benign
to the point of "blissful non-awareness". It was that type of racism that existed during the fifties: a society that shunned their social out-groups and passed laws so that type of non-existence continued by keeping out of basic social institutions. Anyone different represented the underbelly of American culture. That is why people who benefited from such a society often look back at that decade as the "golden years" instead of reflecting on the ugliness that lay underneath.

To preserve such myopic sentiment, the dominant culture will pretend what some of their ilk are doing to preserve such privilege and power "is not racist". In fact, these sentiments are openly lauded as being "a matter of law" and beneficial of "true Americanism". However, the question is, which America are these actions for?

Unfortunately, the repercussions of such draconian legislation are conveniently ignored and played off as nothing.

Child, this little theme shows up on DU almost monthly. People just straight up PINING away for the 50's and 60's.

I'm not saying that there weren't very happy people during this time, but as a black woman you aren't too likely to find me pining for an era that would have me uneducated, unemployed or underemployed or underpaid, and just ready to be lynched for "sassing" the wrong person.

17. I don't pine away for that time as well. I'm also a Black woman.

I grew up on stories told about the ugliness of that time. I don't ever want to go back. That's why people are fooling themselves if they think that period of time was some sort of Disneyland.

20. There are always those who pine away for some mythical golden age
What everybody forgets is, there was no golden age. Never has been. Never will be.

Right now is the best time ever and right now is fleeting.
