Do we really want the Dept. of Homeland Security to create a National ID program?
The following is a cut and paste from a petition that has been circulating online and is supported by a diverse coalition of organizations including the ACLU, the American Library Association, American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, Bill of Rights Defense Committee, Center for Digital Democracy, Association of American Physicians & Surgeons, National Center for Transgender Equality, National Council of La Raza, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, National Immigration Law Center, People for the American Way, Gun Owners of America and the Young Democrats of America. Click on the link below to read more.

Organizations have launched a nationwide campaign to engage the public in the debate over what would be the first national identification document. These transpartisan, nonpartisan, privacy, consumer, civil liberty, civil rights, and immigrant organizations have joined in this unique public education project because the REAL ID proposal put forth by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would harm our lives in a multitude of ways every day. The proposed regulations set requirements that states must follow to have their state issued identification documents accepted for federal purposes, like getting on an airplane or entering a government building, including courthouses.

The power of the Department of Homeland Security, along with other federal government agencies, to reach into the everyday lives of people living in this country will be unprecedented.

This is the same federal agency that had responsibility for helping people following hurricane Katrina, and proved itself not to be ready for the challenge. Creating a national identification system is a huge, complex project and there no agency in the Federal government that has proven that it could manage a project of this magnitude.

What we do know: You will make more than one trip to the motor vehicle office to apply for your REAL ID national identification card; the government has estimated that the scheme will cost taxpayers $21 billion; REAL ID requires documentation that most people will have difficulty finding; and the cost of driver's licenses and state ID cards will skyrocket. We do know that the federal government is considering expanding the REAL ID card to everyday use.

1. We can only imagine how screwed up that system would be
The aftermath of Katrina aid should be a good reason to be cautious about anything the HSD cooks up.

4. Their first act would be to farm out everything to private companies.
Companies would get huge contracts, screw it up, then sell/lose all the information. That's what happened with Katrina.

7. I wouldn't trust the Homeland Security Department...
...to clip my coupons!

Why in the hell would I want them to handle something
as big as a National ID system?

11. K&R This prospect is very scary. The government
knows more about us now than they need to. And to all naysayers out there, I have nothing to hide but that's for me to know, not the governmental agencies.

100,000 Feds Listed in Missing Computer
--------------------------------
TSA has lost a computer with Social Security numbers, bank data and payroll information for about 100,000 employees. Administrator Kip Hawley sent a letter to employees apologizing for the lost data and promising to pay for one year of credit monitoring services.

14. It's a set-up to divide the population into two groups: Rights and No Rights
Those without a the luxury of time (which translates to: got enough $$ to miss some work and jump through hoops) will get to keep some rights. Those without become non-persons.

For all its failures and gaffs (but those were GOP stunts ) the Montana State Legislature did come out good and strong against Real ID.

Like NCLB, Real ID is just a misnamed cruel hoax for the rich and infamous to stay on top.

15. I wonder whether the new rules for passports wasn't an attempt
to create a much larger database in advance of a national id card.

16. Word on the internets street corner is that
there are too many states that have voted in their legislatures not go along with this. It will cost states something like $18 billion in just start up funds, the feds will not reimburse them, so the states are saying no. Bless Maine and Montana for starting the ball rolling - I just read a list of at least 7 other states voting it down too.

17. Republicans used to just HATE unfunded mandates
I wonder what changed their tune on that?

And no, I don't trust these "government programs never work, and watch us prove it" idiots to institute any program, because it will indeed be too expensive, it won't work right, and the information gathered will surely be misused, lost or compromised in some way that will cause the whole program to have to be junked or fixed by the Democrats.
