A map used by Hollywood studios to find locations in CA that resembled foreign places:

A fascinating map published in 1927 that Hollywood studios used to find relatively nearby locations to
film far-away places. As you can see, certain spots in California were considered good for filming places like Siberia, Sherwood Forest, the Sahara Desert, and other movie settings. The source is The American Film Industry by Tino Balio. According to the book, the variety of available geography in southern California is one of the reasons Hollywood became the center of the film industry.

1. Interesting...
I've long been fascinated by the way in which Hollywood has been able to mimick distant locales--often very realistically.

2. siberia...
after a few more inches of snow last night...that's what it freaking *feels* like up here in the Sierras.!!!! Dammitt!

I have always loved being a California girl because we have a little of everything, beaches, desert, forests of varying type, etc.
this is not surprising, but still really cool, thanks for sharing

13. That's an actual town.
Perhaps it was a good filming location? Or maybe it was just thrown in as a geographical reference point?

4. That's just cool. Note that Arizona isn't used--our Sonoran desert has too rich of
plant life to resemble a Middle Easern desert.

6. A lot of things have been filmed at Old Tucson though
Many of them not supposedly set in Arizona. I'm amazed how they were able to film so much there without getting a single saguaro in the shot (unless they wanted one)

10. Our next-door neighbor is a location manager for the studios that film in San Diego -
It's all in the camera angles; she can find places that you wouldn't think could possibly work as, say, section of an early 20th century neighborhood and make it look like it jumped out of an old photograph. Totally missing the modern aluminum and redwood house sitting in the middle of the block, as well as the 1960's apartments built up on the alleys off what used to be extended backyards of a 1930's SoCal bungalow sub-division.

12. There's section of downtown Riverside, CA
just a few blocks from me that shows up as 1930s Los Angeles all the time in films. Some period cars and a bit of judicious yard-clearing and it's like stepping into a time-machine.

they had this lady Louise Currie who starred in them, she's 97 now and they were asking her how she liked filming this series and were WAS the "Burmese jungle?" She was like, oh it was WAY out in the valley! LOL!

14. Some movies and TV shows are supposed to take place in TX
But it is clear from the backgrounds (mountains, etc.) that they were actually shot somewhere else. The TV show "Dallas" was a good example.
