Callers to Rev. Al Sharpton's radio show recently expressed their concern over Limbaugh's comments and urged Sharpton to get involved. They said they found Limbaugh's words degrading and that they feared Limbaugh’s superiors would do nothing to prevent him from making further derogatory statements.
Sharpton said he would not make an issue out of the comments without discussing it with Obama, just as he said he discussed the Imus issue with the Rutgers coach before going public with his objections.
Sharpton said he did not want to go out talking about it and then have Obama to come out later and say it was not an issue to him.http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/news_theswamp/2007/05/obama_parody_dr.htmlI'm not sure why some DUers and other members of the Netroots community are so bent out of shape as it relates to Sharpton's stance on the Obama/Limbaugh controversy. Also, the very people who crticize Al and Jesse about everything are now complaining because they are doing nothing.
Its time for DU, the Daily Kos, MoveOn.org and others in the netroots community to take ownership over this issue and show our true power. If this fails its not Jesse or Al's fault, its our fault! Despite the blatant racial overtones, Obama is very smart not to make an issue of this. If he were to cry foul he would be ridiculed for not having the thick skin necessary to run a campaign in today's environment,
HOWEVER I think there is also an expectation that the people (meaning you, me, my family, your family, etc.)WILL NOT STAND FOR RACIST TACTICS used against him. Its up to all of us to deliver the backlash!I'm so grateful for the work of Jackson and Sharpton,
BUT IN THE YEAR 2007 we should not need them to strike back at racism. We should act on our own! I know if the people rise up and say this is unacceptable, the leaders (all of them, Black, White, Hispanic, Asian, etc.) will join us. But its up to us.
