I just received this from Gov. Brewer's office
Edited on Tue May-25-10 05:55 PM by SargeUNN
STATEMENT BY GOVERNOR JAN BREWER

“Today’s media reports represent a very significant and important shift in the President’s immigration and border security policy. My signing of Senate Bill 1070 has clearly ignited the talk of action in Washington for the people of Arizona and other border states. I am pleased that President Obama has now, apparently, agreed that our nation must secure the border to address rampant border violence and illegal immigration without other pre-conditions, such as passage of “comprehensive immigration reform”.

“Shortly after taking office, in March of 2009 and repeatedly since then, I requested that the federal government increase National Guard troops on Arizona’s border. I have not received an appropriate response to my numerous requests until today. Furthermore, with over $750 million in unreimbursed incarceration expenses owed by the federal government to the State of Arizona alone, I truly hope that previous federal commitments as well as these new commitments are fulfilled, maintained, and grown significantly as soon as possible. Success will be determined by facts on the ground, not on the size of unfulfilled promises or rhetorical flurries.

“I am anxious to hear of the details that have not yet been disclosed of where, how, and for how long additional forces will be deployed. With the accountability of this election year, I am pleased and grateful that at long last there has been a partial response from the Obama Administration to my demands that Washington do its job.”

Office of Governor Janice K. Brewer

------------
because of my media status with her office I do get press releases. I just received this and have only scanned it so far, but thought it would be good to share here.

edit to correct spelling. I lived in Germany for 2 years and because of it I often get confused on occassions where two vowels occur as in received. In German the second is sounded but English the first one which sometimes I get confused which is which. Sorry about that.

1. The old damming with feint praise approach
I see it all the time in my job. Snide, condescending, backhanded compliments.

2.  Hah. This was actually in response to the request of a Democratic Congresswomen
Gabby Giffords and the "first" Governor to ask for troops and the Border, and who got them was Janet Napolitano. Sorry Jan, this has nothing to do with you. And even less to do with SB1070.

7. Jan, Jan, Jan...
As soon as you start locking people up for hiring illegals, I'll have a little compassion for you.

8. Jan, Jan, Jan, Jan, Jan (seeing your three Jans, raising one)
If you REALLY REALLY REALLY want comprehensive immigration reform, perhaps you ought to talk to the members of your own party and their Congressional leadership. THEY are the ones who blocked it, even when a bipartisan bill was supported by your state's senior Senator and President Bush.

If I were you, I'd go with another snarky, condescending press release taking them to task for their intransigence. I'm sure Boehner and McConnell would appreciate your counsel, and would give it some weight--coming from a border state Governor, and all. Of course, they're already on-record OPPOSING immigration reform now, so you might want to use some extra-strong, extra-persuasive language.

Good luck with that.

9. What they are doing is NOT going to work.
Right now it is illegal to be in the United States without the proper documentation, but this nation is so large it's almost impossible to catch the people who are violating the law.

Let's throw out an idea: Stasi-style checkpoints to catch all the illegals. If you put one on Highway 6 three miles north of Nogales, an illegal-immigrant employer who passes through the checkpoint without getting stopped (because he is never in public in the presence of an illegal) is going to pull out his cell and call all his illegal-immigrant-employing friends: don't let your illegals go down Highway 6 around Nogales because they're arresting illegals. So you spend all the money to do the checkpoint and catch three people. That's an effective use of scarce tax dollars.

We need some sort of very secure identification that cannot be forged--it will probably come down to microchipping people, Idiocracy-style tattoos or something else stuck permanently to your body, sad to say--coupled with hard time for people who hire illegals to even make a dent in the illegal immigration problem.

10. No we don't want to solve this because we don't really give a damn
I have learned that far too many have no real interest in solving this because most don't even want to learn the facts on it. We are a nation that likes to lump everything into a nice one size fits all class and then to hell with facts and understanding. We don't want to know the problems and learn the truth when we can generalize and hate hate hate some group.

11. I think you're right...
Have you ever suffered through an evening of TruTV? AKA the Arrest Channel? They've got shows about people getting speeding tickets, getting arrested for DUI, auto theft, murder...the only thing they seem to show on that network is people getting thrown in jail. Oh, and they have their marquee show, an hour of people getting their cars repossessed. Well...once the Arizona immigration law goes into force, expect an hour of people getting arrested for immigration violations. Yup, that's the American way: run around throwing everyone in jail without worrying about why they do what they do. It's simpler to just arrest people for illegal immigration (again and again and again) than it is to figure out how to keep them out.
