In case you were worried, BP will come through this just fine.
My Spousal Unit got home from an out of town trip today and we went out to eat so he could unwind and we could spend un-pressured time together.

The little Thai place we frequent has a TV in the main room which is usually on CNN (an upgrade from several years ago when it was occasionally on Fox) They were covering Carville and Matalin's trip to LA. In the report they were showing a 2nd City skit ragging on BP.

Seated behind us is a Mom and Daughter. Daughter: young very pretty blond with a sorority tee on. She looks about 20... and from where she is sitting she can see the report. I hear her ask her mother: "What's a BP?"

I just about choked on my food. The Spouse looked startled, since he only caught my reaction and not the cause. I motioned to those behind me and mouthed "Oh, My God." He asked, but I couldn't explain as there were the only 6 people (including us) in the place and I knew if I got started, it would be....unpleasant. I inherited my mother's rather ferocious temper and the only difference between us, is I've never been arrested for losing mine. I didn't plan on going to jail for this chippie.

Mom turns to look and says something about the oil spill and asks why the daughter wanted to know. Daughter: "I just wondered why they were pouring that brown stuff everywhere." Mom explains a little more about the situation.

Daughter: "Well, if it's everywhere, why can't they just burn it?"

It is taking every bit of my restraint to hold my tongue. The Spouse keeps asking if I'm okay, but I just keep motioning to my back and rolling my eyes. I think he's afraid I'm stroking out. I speak, a little louder than I need to, about the report and the asshattery of BP hoping that something will seep in, even subliminally. I mean, it's not like she's got anything else taking up the space in her head.

Finally they leave and I burst out: "That woman is wasting her money sending that child to college. She's a complete idiot."

And folks, that's who BP is counting on. The clueless and the unconcerned.

Don't worry about BP. They'll be just fine.

1. I showed my nephew the live feed of "the oil well" and he asked, "what oil
well?". He's 20, just home from college and his parents only watch the local news. This doesn't interest them enough to discuss it. My nephew is of course hanging out with his friends and going out to Mariners games, so I KIND of give him a pass. I think I blame his parents more for not impressing on him as he was growing up the importance of the environment.

2. The environment...yeah, I guess it's not like we need it or anything.
I keep reading posts where people are flabbergasted that other folks are still frequenting BP stations.

I think there's a disconnect between the level of discourse on this board and the commonly held reality.

9. You're probably right. Hell, I've been riveted to a web feed of stuff spewing out
of the ocean floor all day long. I'm guessing just DU denizens do that sort of thing. At least you left the house to go out to eat! :7

5. The fact that the rec. count is probably -53
Speaks to hard truths that many people don't like facing.

Doing the right thing is an uphill battle. It never gets easier. And all you can do, is do the best you can.

8. I have to quote Gandhi to myself about 3 times a week
Be the change you want to see in the world.

Trying to "fix" the world is an impossible task. But trying to be a better human being is not.

4. Ditto, My Sister, age 62
We were just chatting and I asked her what she thought of the Volcano in Iceland? (I'm flying with a friend to Europe in 3 weeks) She says "What Volcano?" so, to change the subject, I mention the Oil leak. You guessed it, she says "What oil Leak?". We were in a Grocery store today, with a garden centre addition, one of the customers was complaining about the 22% tax on a plant she was buying (GST +PST, Canadians know what I'm talking about.) She looked at me like she expected support, I said "Don't look at me, I didn't vote Liberal" in a fairly loud voice. The Look I got in return was priceless. However, my sister wanted to know what my vote had to do with it. Yes, She is that clueless. It's not just collage age or younger people. There is still hope for younger people to grow and learn, My sister, Not so much....

11. My mom had no clue about the volcano or oil gusher either
but then she also had no clue that my home took a direct hit by hurricane Charley in 2004. When I called her a week later when I finally found one working public phone she said "there was a hurricane in Florida? When?". Ever since she became a born again Southern Baptist she's been completely-and I mean COMPLETELY- cut off from the real world. She has no use for it at all. If it's not about Jesus she just doesn't care. I suspect that there are many like her in the U.S. of A.

6. Don't worry, be happy, CONSUME... BUY A LIFESTYLE
BUY HIGH COUTURE...

Oh wait, care HOW that is produced? SHHH...

And not just BP... but they are, me and BIL have been talking about, and not just BP, essential for our high energy demanding, oil based civilization.

I cannot get that across, he can't.... and not even here.

That kid MIGHT get it when she cannot buy gas, or worst, we start having shortages as the Green Revolution recedes and we are forced to eat what the land naturally produces, not what the land produces in high intensity, oil fueled, industrial agriculture. Sadly, even here, people will not notice until that point.
