Why did this take 5 weeks to attempt?

and when they did, they had to calculate the back pressure very carefully so they wouldn't blow the whole thing apart and make an even worse mess.

Even if this works, it's only a temporary fix. That pressure relief well is the only long term fix.

If it works, just hope it holds out until August.

You always attempt the easiest, cheapest fix first. You don't change the transmission in your car because it slips when it's cold. You check the linkage, and if that isn't the problem you check the level of the transmission fluid (some mechanics might disagree with that sequence, but linkage adjustment doesn't cost you anything if you can do it yourself). If that doesn't work, you change the filter. If that doesn't work you go to the next step. The LAST step is changing the transmission.

"Top kill" is nothing new. Surely it was on the list of possible fixes, but because of its complexity and the possibility that it could exacerbate the problem, it wasn't tried first.
