Lincoln embraces left in runoff campaign ads

By ANDREW DeMILLO

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- After vowing that she answered to Arkansas and not the Democratic Party - only to find herself forced into a runoff vote by a rival backed by liberal activists - Sen. Blanche Lincoln is embracing the left as she fights to keep her job.

The messages are a shift for Lincoln, who spent months distancing herself from the national Democratic Party and the Obama administration. In her first ad in March, she touted her opposition to a government-run insurance option as part of the health reform as well as legislation calling for a "cap-and-trade" approach to reducing carbon pollution.

But Lincoln, considered one of the most vulnerable members of Congress, has faced heavy criticism and a high-dollar push from labor unions and liberal groups that have backed Halter's bid. They cite her opposition to a public option as part of the health care plan and for voting against a companion bill. She's also faced criticism from Republicans for supporting the health overhaul at all.

1. Too little, too late, Blanche. The time to have embraced the left was when you were voting.
You have a long voting record of being right of center. You have a long voting record of not voting for what is best for Arkansas and its citizens. And now that voting record has caught up with you.

You're too late.

Arkansas is a beautiful state, and its citizens deserve better representation than they've received from you.

4. It might not be
Lieberman went around yelling he was more anti-war than Lamont, swore he'd spearhead an investigation into Bush's Katrina fiasco. And of course, the chumps bought it. And after he was re-elected, Joe pretty much told anyone who assumed he wasn't lying to suck his dick.

9. Maybe its African-American voters deserve better...

But Arkansas is one of those disgusting states, almost all of which seem to be in a specific region of the country that has had nothing to be proud of since Texas last elected Ann Richards (only to subsequently vote her out for a delusional alcoholic chimp), where Obama did worse than Kerry among Whites in spite of Obama's being more conservative than Kerry and the huge national swing to the Democratic Party.

5. Reaching out to the left
But like a toddler on a leash, she can be yanked back into the lap of Daddy Warbuck's Corporation at any time.

6. Not sure what's going to happen in this run-off but for what it's worth
I'm rooting for Bill Halter.

Recommended.

7. It would be nice to have a general election that was not between a R and a DINO
Give the people a REAL choice. A Republican and and an actual Democrat, dying breed though they are.

11. Blanche is screwed. Even Emily's List won't campaign for her.

Surprised about Blanche Lincoln's fight for survival? I'm not.

Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln is fighting for her political survival. Republicans are in full attack mode, and polls indicate she's the most vulnerable Senate incumbent in the country.

Frankly, I'm not surprised.

As I travel around the country, I've been asked repeatedly about Senator Lincoln's political troubles and what, if anything, EMILY's List will be doing to help her win a third term in 2010.

My answer? Nothing.

In 1998, EMILY's List helped elect Lincoln to the U.S. Senate. We believed her when she told us that that, if and when the Senate took up right-wing Senator Rick Santorum's bill to ban what he called "partial birth" abortion, she would insist on a health exception that protects women.

Our members gave generously to her campaign, believing that she would steadfastly stand by the pledge she made to us to protect women's reproductive freedom.

She took our members' hard-earned money to get elected. Unfortunately, when the Santorum bill came up for a vote, Lincoln voted for it even though it provided no exception to protect women's health.

EMILY's List members are deeply committed to electing pro-choice Democratic women whom we trust to stand up for our rights, treat us honestly, and make us proud. Our candidates fight for us every day. Blanche Lincoln failed to hold up her end of the bargain.

Since she wasn't there for us, we won't be there for her.

EMILY's List withdrew support for Senator Lincoln in 1999 after she voted in favor of the so-called "partial birth abortion ban" and has not supported her since.
