Topkill has failed to stop flow of oil

Look at all that smoke.

It's plain to see it's spewing chocolate and caramel.

I can tell it's smoke from comparison to all this crack I'm smoking.

If you were smoking meth instead you'd plainly see how the Top Kill failed and they've struck a mother load of Ben and Jerry's Karamel Sutra.

Remember, they have to keep the pressure of mud flowing into the BOP. You let off the flow and oil comes back. Once the oil has been held back by the mud, then they fill the pipe with cement and then they turn off the mud.


It will be sometime before the mud is no longer needed.

But it does look like mud flowing.

On the left and right, clearly mud. In the middle looks like mud and oil.

Gawd, I hope this thing turns a nice yellow color. I like yellow. It is now my favorite color.

At least the middle plume does. But I'm not an expert. I hope to God this has at least slowed the amount of oil getting into the ocean -- every little bit helps some.... it's at least progress.

I'll wait until we hear more from experts from rushing to conclusions, but if nothing else at least there was some time when all that was getting into the water was mud. Even a few hours is better than nothing.

Today much of it is synthetic compounds mixed with specific types of clay to form a very dense liquid.

Looks like the color of drilling fluid to me.

I've had the pleasure of mixing that stuff on a drilling rig (not an oil rig, laying fiber optics).

It's mud.

Any idea what it's specific gravity is?

I was a drone, humping sacks of bentonite to the mud platform and dumping it into the mixer.

His was lignin based. Very unusal, non-newtonian fluid. Kind of like oobleck, if you ever played with that.

All depends on the particular physical properties needed.

It is pretty dense stuff but no idea if it is dense enough to float steel.

What other things do you give expert opinions on which you aren't qualified to do?

If you'll wander on over to the Oil Drum and read through the threads there in which actual experts are discussing these things, you will find information about the difficulty of doing such subtle color analysis. You have to know a lot of things about the conditions at the precise moment the photos are taken, where the light sources are, how many other objects with reflective surfaces are in the area, how much and what kind of matter is in the water through which the light is being filtered, etc. ...

We do not know yet if this will ultimately be successful, but your analysis is without a sound basis and in fact hinges on the *worst* method of forming a judgment.

The only people who really know specifically what is coming up out of the pipes are the people looking at instrumentation gauges on the surface.

They need another 24 to 48 hours. It will get harder as they go deeper.

BP is injecting drilling mud into well to force oil back down well shaft.

However the "top" of BOP is open thus some of the mud will come flowing out. To avoid losing all the mud BP needs to continually inject new mud into the well.

As bad as BP is, I sure was wishing this worked. I thought the President had a pretty good press conference and I'm glad the government is controlling BP's actions - so I have hope.
