Anybody seen any discussion either supporting or challenging just 2 relief wells?
My intuition is that 2 relief wells isn't enough to give a sufficient probability of success, but it's something that can be calculated.

I'm concerned that the cost of drilling each relief well is the driver, not the hard engineering numbers.

How many nines does that give you, BP?? Actually, if someone in the government isn't all over that answer, then that in itself is a problem.

1. Despite the fact the field covers 25,000 sq miles
I'm guessing they need proximity to the current one and its possible that more than two could create an even bigger problem.

2. They are only drilling one at the moment
Drilling on the other has stopped so they can move its blow out preventer to the gushing well as part of one of the contingencies.

There is a lot of negative comment about that.

4. I thought I read that they had stopped work on the second relief well?
So now it's just one?

5. Yeah, a backup that's being cannibalized for parts isn't really a backup.
That's partly what got me thinking about this.
