NATO general (McChrystal) in Afghanistan: Victory will be slow

By HEIDI VOGT
Associated Press Writer
May 30, 6:46 AM EDT

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- The commander of NATO and U.S. forces stressed Sunday that progress toward real stability in Afghanistan will be slow as international troops painstakingly try to win over a population that includes its enemies and has little trust in the government.

The NATO push in Afghanistan has long been running on two timelines: one in which officials call for years of patience to establish peace in the war-wracked nation, and one in which President Barack Obama promises to begin drawing down troops in July 2011.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal told reporters in the capital that the Afghanistan fight will extend long beyond Obama's deadline, though hopefully with increasing involvement from Afghan forces.

In recent meetings with President Hamid Karzai, Obama "reaffirmed the strategic partnership, which is way beyond July 2011," McChrystal said. "I think President Obama's decision to begin the reduction of U.S. forces in 2011 really needs to be viewed in that context."

A winter offensive in the southern Afghan town of Marjah has been followed by the re-infiltration of Taliban forces into the area despite a continuing strong U.S. Marine presence.

unhappycamper comment: Perhaps Stanley doesn't realize that we have been in Afghanistan twice as long as we were WW II. Or perhaps he knows the American public put up with Vietnam for 14+ years and he's good for at least another coupla years.

of a job too. And so will the people who make money off of selling weapons. The USSR couldn't "win" in Afghanistan and the US is at a far greater logistical disadvantage. "Slow" might mean forever.

7. Naaah.
After he retires Stanley will be on the Board of Directors for Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, or some other 'defense' contractor.

4. After nine years, the greatest military force in the world has not yet subdued these fighters.
We will go bankrupt faster than we could beat them down.

8. It's not about winning but justifying the need for a huge Military.
How are the Generals going to get another star, the second looie a silver bar?

You stuff the snuffies into the meat grinder and get your ticket punched.

12. Amen, brother!
Until we have a president who understands history, the only way to avoid foreign adventurism is a draft. While we're at it there should be a law against the US using mercenary forces.

6. War Pigs
Generals gathered in their masses
Just like witches at black masses
Evil minds that plot destruction
Sorcerers of death's construction
In the fields the bodies burning
As the war machine keeps turning
Death and hatred to mankind
poisoning their brainwashed minds
Oh Lord yeah

Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight
They leave that all to the poor

Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait 'till their judgment day comes

Now in darkness world stops turning
As the war machine keeps burning
No more war pigs have the power
Hand of God has struck the hour
Day of judgment God is calling
On their knees, the war pigs crawling
Begging mercy for their sins
Satan laughing spreads his wings
Oh Lord yeah
