My 10 year old son just wrote this about Iraq
The children wake up

As the battle sounds are heard from afar

The time of need for the children’s fathers

The battle shall live in history

But shall be regretted in homes

It can never be reversed

The clouded skies of cannons

The blood stained lands

The desert winds wipe away the debris

While the wealthy sleep

The children weep

In a battle torn land

I tell you this child is scaring me today. All of a sudden poetry is streaming out of him.

4. That's a 'direct hit' poem! Are you sure he's only 10 years old?

8. Got the stretch marks and birth certificate to prove it.
He's left me with my mouth hanging open today. Three poems from his pen (keyboard) this morning when he's never shown the slightest inclination to poetry in the past.

6. A child's perspective will end this invasion.
I said this some time ago. I see just what your son wrote. I see those nights of fear. A horrible sin is being committed. There is nothing we can reverse. He's so right.

What an incredibly powerful poem. Your son is brilliant.

10.  Thank you for sharing his thoughts ...
I would be proud to have a kid that is able to see the most Glaring injustice of this attack on Iraq, and the innocent lives ended or ruined by the US invasion. I am sickened by the non stop reference to soldiers dying with rarely a word of sympathy for the only victims, in this massacre ... that had nor made any choices. The men, women and children of Iraq.

11. To me, this illustrates what sponges children are.
I don't watch television news and my husband takes the newspaper with him on his way to work in the morning. I listen to books on tape, lecture series or CDs in the car. I get my news on the internet. So it's not like this child is being bombarded with images of war. Yes, he knows about it and we discuss it from time to time. No way to avoid that with an activist mama. But if a 10 year old boy can pick up on the horror with this degree of exposure it really drives home the impact on kids.
