Beck: common good "paves the way to death camps"
Edited on Wed Jun-02-10 08:11 PM by and-justice-for-all
Ok, now I think I have heard it all now. Not surprising he is regurgitating Ayn Rand garbage, who was pro communist..

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In his radio broadcast last Friday, Glenn Beck addressed a recent column written by Jewish Funds for Justice's President and CEO Simon Greer.

In the column, Simon asserted that "to put God first is to put humankind first, and to put humankind first is to put the common good first."

Beck's response?

"This leads to death camps. A Jew, of all people, should know that. This is exactly the kind of talk that led to the death camps in Germany. Put humankind and the common good first."

This statement is irresponsible and ignorant, and we will not let this go unanswered.

1. His hateful ignorance is disgraceful.

The Nazis were about national rebirth through conquest and racial hierarchy--German fascism had nothing to do with "the common good" or "humankind."

5. Do you imagine that any context exists in which Beck's rancid verbal spew makes sense?
If so, please elaborate.

16. OK, here's context: Beck is the EPITOME of douchebaggingly sociopathic hatemongering profiteers.
There's yer fucking 'context' right there, pal.
It's just that simple.

One starring Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell.

22. Not that I agree
but to answer your question, his point was that when you setup the structure, laws, and policy of "common good" you then hand over immense power to the government. The government then gets to decide what is common good and what is not. That's OK when what is considered common good aligns with your beliefs and wants but what about when it doesn't? What if people come to power that use it for bad purposes? He said it paves the way for camps because that is how they eventually deal with those that stand in the way of the common good.

If so, it looks like Beck and Rand Paul in a dead heat, with Palin a distant third. For now.

I didn't even know he existed until the last year or two, but I can see where he is digressing more and more in his behavior by acting in an irresponsible way and making statements that don't even make sense.

The sad thing is that many people follow him and believe everything he says. He, along with Rush, Coulter, Palin, Bachmann and their ilk are causing irreparable damage to our country and our political system.

They need to be called out for their irresponsible behavior immediately after it happens by showing the truth through videos, newspaper articles and quotes from speeches they have made. I don't think they are smart enough to realize the "proof" is out there because they love camera time so much. Nail them with their own words.

10. Ayn Rand was pro communist?
She was most certainly anti-communist.

Her father's business was confiscated by the socialists which no doubt ended her bourgeoisie existence which I believe led to her deeply seeded hatred of anything which is done for collective purposes.

20. Indeed, she was unabashedly anti-communist
Edited on Wed Jun-02-10 11:00 PM by Canuckistanian
She was the Uber-Libertarian - no common property, such as public parks, no welfare, no unions. Like Reagan, she believed government was the cause of all ills in society, not the solution.

That's hardly a "pro-communist" stance.

24. She wasn't really a libertarian either
At least as far as what she considered a libertarian to be. She thought libertarians of her day were morons (and rightly so although probably not for the reasons she gave), although more recent libertarian movements like the recent crop of looneytarians base much of their ideology on her writings. What I find funny is that Ayn Rand thought of herself as a philosopher, but many (if not most) modern philosophers thought her philosophy was itself moronic.

14. NWO talk.
Reminds me of the NWO-Nibiru-Reptilians-9/11 Twoof-Iapetus is a death star-Jesus will save us-chemtrails-ron paul-ites. They'd accuse you of being a Nazi while three minutes earlier they were screaming about the evil Jews and their fascio-communist NWO, or some nonsense.

I wonder what percentage of the world is clinically mad?

But if it's possible, I'd like to move beyond Beck's grotesque Holocaust rhetoric for a minute and turn to another substantive disagreement Beck and I have, not about the causes of Nazism but about the future of America.

On the one hand are those of us, including many in faith communities, who believe that government has a vital role to play in promoting the common good. As I wrote in the initial op-ed, "Government is one way which we care for our neighbors, and tradition tells me to care for my neighbor as I care for myself. Here's what we do for each other as Americans: We grow food, we create jobs, we build homes, pave roads, teach our children, care for our grandparents, secure our neighborhoods. Government makes our country function."

This reasonable sentiment reflects the values system of many Americans. It is true that government in the United States has always had its flaws. Jews and other communities have, at different times, suffered from these flaws. But at its best, government plays a powerful role in providing us with greater freedom, security and opportunity.
