How empathic are you?
The thread was getting long,

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=8463708&mesg_id=8463708

and I don't mean to hijack it, but take the test yourself and then judge the results of the study:

I don't feel particularly kind hearted - there are so many people that really are. I'm a toad by comparison.

6. I have this theory that people who
aren't overly empathetic are actually better off. I've become (mostly) a hermit...because it's much too easy to get caught up in other folks' problems.

9. That's my philosophy if I had a philosphy that I articulated, being a hermit as well, I put up walls
to protect myself and there seems no point in my mind to getting really emotionally involved in things I can't change, aren't likely to change and that would just leave me drained 'feeling' everything.

11. I have gotten compassion fatigue....
I still care just as much, but I find that I have to force myself to turn off the news, or click past certain stories, because they will haunt me.

While I miss my mom so much, I am glad she passed before 9/11 because I inherited my soft heart from her, and she would have fallen apart at the coverage. She cried at coffee commercials. The nightly news often made her sob for people who were hurting.

7. Hi
:hi:

61/70 higher empathy than 87.1% of participants

For the record, most political cartoons/skits/put downs seem more mean than funny to me. That includes using words like "tea bagger."

Live and let live.

22. I got the same score.
As I've gotten older, I've withdrawn more into my little shell. It's not that I don't care any more, but with all the mayhem, cruelty, catastrophes and tragedies "out there", at times I simply feel overwhelmed.

18. I scored the same as the college students 50/70, but that
may mean that I'm a harsher judge of myself than the writers of the test expected since I'm pretty much a push-over. I'm not certain the test is any more valid than the typical Facebook quiz.

So much for "autistics don't have empathy". :eyes:

But what does this question have to do with empathy?

I believe that there are two sides to every question and try to look at them both.

That is a wishy-washy relativist attitude, not empathy. A lot of things "DON'T have "more than one side", that notion is how creationists and denialists get a foot-hold into the public discourse.

27. Nearly every question has at least two answers, being able to see beyond the answer you would give
or agree with is 'empathetic' towards another person's/people's view, without actually taking on their persona as the similar question asks.

A question with only 'one' answer "Am I alive?" if you are asking the question you are 'alive' unless there is an afterlife and you are asking it there, or you are dreaming(lucid or not) etc.

30. I got 55 out of 70
but the test, of course, does not measure how empathetic I am, only how empathetic I THINK I am.

I also did not like #12 "I believe that there are two sides to every question and try to look at them both."

I think there are usually more than two sides.

33. 58/70. I don't listen to "all sides" of an argument and that lowered my score.
Deeply caring for people is one thing; validating the violent, selfish fools who hurt them by listening to "their side" is another.

Not sure how helpful/accurate this test is, however. I tend to judge people more on their actions than their attitudes.
