What caused the gusher
was the insane decision to keep pumping water onto the Deepwater Horizon. This is what sank it. Normally, with a blowout fire, you let it burn until a containment/capping procedure can be done. I don't know why they kept spraying a natural gas/petroleum fire with water. Those looking to point fingers should research who made the decision to keep pumping those thousands of gallons of water.

1. I think you're confusing a few things
They were pumping seawater into the well to keep it under control, rather than more expensive drilling mud. That was BEFORE the blowout.

The seawater didn't hold the oil back. then the cement plug gave way. THEN the explosion happened.

It was the substitution of seawater for drilling mud that caused the blowout and the resulting fire. Fighting the fire is a whole different issue.
