'Chelsea's Law' would send some molestors to prison for life

SACRAMENTO, CA (AP) -- A bill that would lock up some convicted child molesters for life has cleared the state Assembly after lawmakers proclaimed that predators would never change their ways. Assembly Bill 1844

The bill, known as Chelsea's Law, passed Thursday with a 65-0 vote. It now goes to the state Senate.

The bill is named after a 17-year-old girl who was murdered this year in a San Diego County park. A convicted child molester pleaded guilty to raping and killing Chelsea King and 14-year-old Amber Dubois.

Assem. Mary Salas, D-Chula Vista said sexual predators who commit the most heinous crimes should be sent to prison for life so they can't threaten more children.

1. It's about time - when there's someone warped enough to do this and then
they put all these requirements on them when released to not be near places because they are so likely to re-offend, I've never understood why they don't just lock them up where they are never around children again

Let a few potheads out if they need the space

4. For some of us
that's our first choice. Those who think they're just another misunderstood sexual minority make it pretty damned expensive to do that, what with the appeals process and all.

7. I doubt many people think that, to be honest. The appeal process is a constitutional requirement.
It is what it is. Blind, to a point, even to such heinous crimes, by design.

12. Yes, it is a requirement
but endless rounds of appeals, on each and every issue, one by one, stretching out for decades, just makes it impossibly expensive to execute. But then again, that's what the opponents of the DP have in mind.

10. It's either execute them, or life without parole...
A number of people are not willing to settle for anything less.

And yes, I do believe some of these offenders are wholly not re-habitable. And let's be blunt here, we're talking about men, mostly white men who are these serial offenders. Some white men are simply two-legged vermin.

And I'm a white man.

3. Good
Lock 'em up and throw away the key. I'm an atheist, but even the most vengeful version of a deity ever imagined on this earth could not make a place in hell hot enough for a child rapist.

5. I'd prefer longer sentences for these criminals. How about life plus 300 years?

6. If it's child molestors who murder, I'm fine with that
as long as they change the headline to "'Chelsea's Law' would send some murderers to prison for life". Child molestation is heinous. Murder is worse.

And if it's not reserved for murderers, then it's just what we don't need out here: more lifers for us to feed and clothe, along with the steady stream already coming to us courtesy of the chowderheaded "three strikes" law.

13. not a bad idea....
a 80yr old was released from prison and with in a couple of months he molested again. many in the community have known about this guy for years but did`t do anything till the laws were finally changed and enforced...he was a boy scout leader till he was arrested.
