The hat installed to great fanfare and hoopla, and reported with the reading of fawning scripts, will recover about 5% of the massive amount of oil being spewed each SECOND that this continues.

Remember, BP has to pay fines based on the amount of oil spewed.

Here's the statement from Thad Allen, which specifically says they don't know how well it's working or if it will work at all.

“The placement of the containment cap is another positive development in BP’s most recent attempt to contain the leak; however, it will be sometime before we can confirm that this method will work and to what extent it will mitigate the release of oil into the environment. Even if successful, this is only a temporary and partial fix and we must continue our aggressive response operations at the source, on the surface and along the Gulf's precious coastline.”

Try to do that without your preconceptions of what my motives might be.

Today MY GOVERNMENT said that it was far too early to be optimistic, so it doesn't sound like it's lying to me at all.

They've said all along that the only way they know now to kill the well is with the relief wells. I don't think they're lying about that.

It doesn't say that anyone is lying to you. It says that if they say we're recovering the oil, *then* they're lying to you. And the liars could be the government or BP ..... or any of their enthusiasts.

Notice, just as an example, how someone in this thread implied I expect the government to fix things right now. In actual fact, I have posted more than once the very opposite of that. This was BP's and just BP's. If the administration is guilty of anything thus far, it is bad theatrics. Hell, even that moron, Jindal was besting them until he wrote that letter chastising the government for the deep water drilling hold.

In addition to one's filters and biases, reading someone's message as opposed to hearing/seeing one say it, leads to misinterpretations, too. My best friend and I have to clarify sometimes, and he and I practically share a brain, so the written word throws another wrench into the works.

Although I'm not in agreement with those who wanted to see Obama MAD (but it would have been nice) - because that's just not his way, I do think he should have communicated more frequently and strongly at the outset.

in the middle east are spent in Iraq and Afghanistan, and elsewhere, how about billions to control the oil here??? every resource should be going to this potentially apocolyptic horror...every resource...

Before they cut the riser off, they said that it could increase the oil flow by up to 20%- So...if the flow actually did increase by 20%, and they're only collecting 5%- more oil is going into the gulf than before they cut the riser and put on the cap.

example- 100 + 20% = 120. and 120-5% = 114.

so- "IF" the oil flow increased 20%, and they're capturing 5% of the increased flow, 14% MORE oil would be going into the gulf than before the riser was cut off.

Who has been officially projecting ANY percentage, much less only 5%?

Or is that some made-up figure?

Who has made that estimate?

Unless you know the real rate of the flow, you cannot estimate what percentage is going into the boat.

We know it's less than 100% and more than 0%.

Any number given by anybody, including Stinky's 5%, is just a guess based on no real information.

That paragraph does not appear in the linked Reuters story.

The story states: "Early estimates were that the cap might be about to capture only 1,000 barrels a day."

Yesterday they got over 6000 barrels.

So, they're capturing more than 5%, and you said they would not.

1. push the cap's seal harder down on to the BOP (perhaps already done?)

2. close several relief valves (4? more?)

3. draw out oil through the bottom of the BOP
