Absolutely Incredible Pencil Drawings of Animals That Look Like Photographs
This is a reprieve from so much miserable news. The drawings are breathtakingly beautiful and that they are drawn using just ONE pencil staggers belief. Enjoy.

4. Oh my heavens. those are spectacular... Take the time to view
on the link. I can not believe some studio hasn't snagged him as the artist does it only as a hobby in his spare time from his job. I'd love to own one, but suspect they will rapidly be priced out of any "normal" person's budget (besides the fact it doesn't say they are for sale).

It leaves me, an artist, speechless. This kind of artwork is known as photorealism. It takes talent and a very keen eye and dedication.

Edited on Sat Jun-05-10 11:28 AM by fascisthunter
it takes lot's of time and patience, but it is also very rewarding when you complete a piece. It's been a while for me, but today, I will try to continue to finish an oil painting I started a few months back before my father got very sick.

I now have two projects.... portraits of the whole family in pencil, and a series of landscape oil painting that will fit into a larger panorama when hung on the wall. Lot's to do....

11. Having no talent whatsoever, I used to do pencil drawing every bit as good as these. My method...
I used my slide projector to project a negative onto a sheet of drawing paper. Working in a darkened room, I would then use a pencil to darken the light areas until I made the whole page look uniformly black. When I turned off the projector and turned on the room lights I would have a nearly perfect pencil drawing of the image on the negative. In other words, I did with a pencil what photo paper did chemically. Wherever the negative was light, I made the paper dark, and wherever the negative was dark, I left the paper light.

You have to use a black and white negative. Using a positive there's no way to judge when you have applied enough pencil to any area of the paper.

It's a beautiful way to make pencil drawings with no talent whatsoever.

Here's a sample:

I applaud your creativity. IMO, having some kind of creative endeavor is crucial to being a well-balanced human. Even if it's just paint by number.

for one thing, all the links in the article go to ads. and it is just not possible to get a black black like that from graphite. it is just not that color.
at the very least they are digitally enhanced. but they look like photographs to me.

Edited on Sat Jun-05-10 11:48 AM by fascisthunter
I graduated from MAss Art with a Bachelors in Art, a concentration in illustration and I know for a fact pencils can achieve a deep black.

look up HB graphite pencils... HB and higher are very dark.

33. Oh, it's for real, believe me...
Back quite a few years ago I took an art class with a guy who taught us how to do the same thing (except we used 4 pencils).

I've moved around many times since then and have lost my drawings, but they were realistic enough so that you couldn't distinguish them from photographs.

:)

22. Very nice! My aunt used to do animal portraits with stippled pen
No lines, just dots. I still don't know how she found the patience to do that.

Pencil is my favorite medium, although Corel Painter is starting to get really good. The only thing it lacks is the feedback of a real pencil, which IMO is extremely important. I'm still waiting for decent digital paper, a promise that has been made every year for the past 20 years.

34. for that pencil feedback feeling, have you used a wacom tablet?
when working with digital images, using a mouse feels like painting with a bar of soap.

35. Yea, I use a large wacom tablet..
It's much nicer than a mouse (or my trackball), but it still has zero feedback.. That is, all strokes of the nib feel exactly the same regardless of the pressure and angle, quite unlike real paper.

Oh and the screen doesn't rotate when I rotate the wacom pad, so the pad has to be kept almost perfectly square to the screen or you lose vertical. Annoying.

I know there are pads now with built in LCD's, but I can't afford one. :(

How does he get the white parts of the animals to look "furry"? I could see if they just looked white because he didn't touch that part but they actually look like white fur there. Wow.

47. I did this once . . .
. . . when I was in grade school. My daddy helped me use the enlarger to project an image of my dog, Kelly, onto a sheet of paper, then I just traced until I got the image I wanted.

Everyone at "Show and Tell" was amazed at my talent. Made me feel great.

Come to think of it, I still have that enlarger in the garage. Maybe I could get it out and make a fortune off my art work.

Sound like a plan?
