A Growing Trend: Spiritual but not Religious
72% of Millennials describe themselves as "more spiritual than religious." As usual, religious conservatives complain - some catholic leaders calling it egotism.

Link - http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/personal/06/03/spiritual.but.not.religious/index.html?hpt=C1

I think this is great. Organized religion got too concerned with controlling people's sexuality and reproduction and telling them how to live their lives, and not enough with helping people. Now, people have rightfully walked away. What is egotistical some guy presuming to have moral authority based on his position in an organized religion, and then calling people egotistical for giving that guy a rightfully deserved middle finger.

1. I agree! Religeous people have become so mean and hypocritical they will
Love a confessed murderer who says he is a Christian before they love a Muslim who has broken no laws.

4. Describes my wife, two daughters and me.
Organized religion is an extremely successful business, and a great way of causing hatred and division...not to mention igniting senseless wars!

Priest Religious, But Not Really Spiritual

BOSTON—Father Clancy Donahue of St. Michael Catholic Church told reporters Wednesday that while he believed in blindly adhering to the dogma and ceremonies of his faith, he tried not to get too bogged down by actual spirituality. "I'm not so much into having a relationship with God as I am into mechanically conducting various rituals," Donahue said. "To me, it just feels empty to contemplate a higher power without blindly obeying canon law and protecting the church as an institution." Donahue emphasized that although he did not personally agree with those who pondered the eternal, he had nothing against them.

9. They might go back when they have kids, that also seems to be
a pattern from generation to generation. However, prosperity theology, hatred of outsiders, and a demand for tithing is not going to woo them back to the megachurch.

As the old guard of the televangelist revolution dies off, I think a lot of the religious lunacy they created and got rich off will die with them.

10. Some of the churches do good work, esp. on a local level, but
most of them are untaxed profit centers. some are even preaching intolerance and hatred from the pulpits and telling their congregation how to vote and what to think. WWJD? I think Jesus would side with the environmentalists, the liberal thinkers, and the humanitarians. I certainly don't think he'd associate with the ones who wear pointy hats, jewels, and fine vestments.

13. sounds an awful lot like plain old egotism to me too.
or maybe they are just plain addle-headed idiots who can not grasp anything more complex than might be explained by the Discovery Channel, who must have done a program on the phenomena if it qualifies as utter nonsense.

14. Organized religion is a scam. And who needs a god that craves being "worshipped"?
That would be one very neurotic god.

"Grovel before me or I will kick your dog and throw you into a pit of fire!" What kind of bullshit deity is that?

My deity has a sense of humor and is all about laughter and joy.

I can recommend Vine Deloria's "Spirit and Reason" as a way to help open clearer pathways. Well, actually, I could probably recommend many authors, but this just happens to be the one I'm currently reading.
