The FBI has joined the search for a 7-year-old Portland boy who disappeared sometime after his stepmother dropped him off inside his elementary school on Friday, The Oregonian reports.

Kyron Horman, a 7-year-old second-grader, is shown here in an undated photo. He disappeared sometime after his stepmother dropped him off at his elementary school on Friday.

Authorities say a student saw Kyron later that morning, but that teachers simply listed him as absent.

His disappearance was not noted until he failed to get off the school bus at 3 :30 p.m.l he failed to get off the school bus at 3 :30 p.m

1. Oh, man...
I hope they find Kyron.

I've got a daughter in second grade and this is my worst nightmare.

2. Listed as absent? Schools don't call right away? Surprising these days. Even thought kids are...
...safer than they've ever been.

Faux and others tell us just the opposite.

3. Depends on the school size.
My neices attend school in rural Oregon. There is usually a call to their house by 9AM if they aren't in class.

My kids attend substantially larger schools here in California. If they aren't in class, I can expect a robodialed announcement informing me of my childs absence and the importance of regular attendance at some point within 48 hours of their missing school.
