29. Even if we set up a stable government...
the country will revert to being a shithole again in short order. Should we stay there forever? We, like all who have tried in the past, will NEVER change that country. These are people ruled by dark age beliefs and like it.

This exclusive report provides seemingly undeniable evidence that NATO's battle for the hearts and minds of Afghans has failed. With the fight still raging almost a decade later, has patience finally run out?

Afghans are still fleeing hundreds of miles north, leaving behind their lush farms in Helmand province. "We're fed up with the fighting and the loss" says Wali Jan, a refugee who has brought his family to Kabul, far from the rockets in the south. NATO is fast losing its battle for the hearts and minds of ordinary Afghan people. The new NATO-trained police are cracking down on poppy crops. But a blow for global heroin means the loss of precious livelihoods here. A NATO-paid Governor assures that security in the province is improving with every pocket of insurgents weeded out. But on the ground locals tell a different story. The Bazaar in Lashgaragah is deserted, one shopkeeper explains why: "our market relies on the villages but there's no security in the villages. There are bombs along the roads." The Taliban fighters responsible for planting those bombs are unrepentant: "our message to the international community is to get out of our country. We won't stop fighting them unless they go." It's a sentiment now echoed by local Afghans: "We don't need these infidels, we don't need their help."

33. No, I don't. So why do you, with your "fer me or agin me" horse shit?
It's simply that I recognize that if we haul ass, things in Afghanistan are going to go from fucking gawdawful, to whatever is worse than "fucking gawdawful."

I have no illusions that we went into Afghanistan for any humanitarian reasons at all. I simply figure that while we're there, we'd better do our best to those people, for the thirty years of assrape we've been delivering them.

Afghanistan was a liberal social democracy (well, at least as much so as the region gets) in the 70's before we and the Russians turned it into a private battlefield. Maybe the Russians don't want to pay their debt, but I feel that we should.

It has nothing to do with Bush or Cheney, and for the record I think we need to cut the cord for the Saudis too, and let the Arabians stick their flabby heads on pikes outside Riyadh, so don't give me that shit, either.

I know it's inconceivable on DU, that someone would want to do right by "those people," which might be why you're confused.

War on Vietnam and Afghanistan and Iraq and a whole lot of other places only serves the interests of the warmongers, not We the People.

What can we do? Thanks to Diebold, they couldn't care less what we think.

27. I would call it a PLAN before
I'd call it a coincidence, which implies something more accidental (to me at least). But I don't think we really disagree on what is going on fundamentally.

25. Just so damned depressing, in so many ways
We are being bankrupted, monetarily and morally, by these illegal, immoral wars. Is it going to take another 'Pug like Nixon to end them? I certainly hope not, but it doesn't look like Obama is going to bring about peace anytime soon.

Kucinich Calls for the End of America’s Longest War
The greatest casualties of this long war are the children of the world

Washington, Jun 7 -

"Today, the War in Afghanistan is officially the longest war Americans have ever been asked to endure. In observance, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today released the following statement:

“The War in Afghanistan has now surpassed the number of years we spent in Vietnam, making it the longest war in U.S. history. This grim landmark must serve as an awakening for the human and financial costs of the war. Our continued presence in Afghanistan foments resentment toward us, undermines the human rights of the Afghan people, and places our troops in harm’s way. Prior to the Memorial Day break, the House passed a bill authorizing $159.3 billion for the continuation of the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the so-called “war on terror” with little-to-no discussion of the cost our constituents must bear to keep the wars going. The war is creating a new generation of Americans who will experience the trauma of war, like Vietnam veterans before them. Billions of dollars go toward our supposed nation-building in Afghanistan. Yet millions of Americans struggle as funds for essential social services get cut.

“The greatest casualties of this long war are the children of the world for whom war becomes as ordinary as the sunrise. Children, who go to bed hungry each night, who are denied the fullness of health, who are ill-housed, ill-clothed, who do not have a chance for a decent education, whose opportunities in life are limited because the resources of nations are squandered in unnecessary wars based on lies. What a terrible legacy this generation of leaders will leave for the children of the world unless we finally come to an understanding of the utter futility of war, unless we challenge the underlying thinking that leads to war, unless we firmly explore the science of human relations which leads away from war and towards understanding and human unity. This is the surge the world is waiting for.

“In the coming weeks, Congress is expected to be asked to give another $33 billion for war efforts. Congress must stop funding this misguided war. We need to bring the troops home now.” said Kucinich."
