b BP. I always use Google for all my searches & now I can't trust what I see! I wonder just how much $$ they got from BP to redirect searches about oil spill to BP propaganda site?

I can't find any way to contact Google! I tried contac google mangement, access google officers, and many other words to find a link, but all I get is different Google apps you can use. Anybody have any ideas ho to find these creatures?

For anyone who hasn't heard, BP paid google to redirect any searches for "oil spill" and who knows how man other phrases to a BP positve propaganda site. Keith Olberman had the story on his show. I wonder how much moey THAT cost them?

3. During Steve Jobs' iPhone 4 keynote today he mentioned that Bing will be integrated into...
...the new iPhone and Safari for OS X.

Finally a reason to get behind Microsoft!

9. Bing sells ad space also.

This is how all search engines business model works.

Does anyone really think these companies spend billions of dollars creating search engines and indexing the entire internet to be "nice".
Of course not. They do it to sell ad space.

4. Misrepresents what google has done.
Google is not directing all searches to BP. They are collecting money from BP to make their site a sponsored link that lands as the first hit on a search. Try it, type oil spill into google and you will see exactly what happens (hint, you get thousands of articles from news sources all over the world)

The number 1 site is BP. My search resulted in:

Bp Oil Spill
www.BP.com/GulfOfMexicoResponse Info about the Gulf of Mexico Spill Learn More about How BP is Helping.

Here is a good article about BP's tactic and why it is good for BP.

10. Yes that is what BP has bought, a sponsored link to be the first hit
with the next few hits being links to USA today, wikipedia, youtube, and NY times. As well as 988 million other hits.

Unless I'm shopping for something I never even glance at sponsored links anyway. Hell even if I'm looking for a particular purchase I rarely click a sponsored link.

Is google making a quick buck? yes. Is it all that effective for BP? Time will tell, but I suspect it will be less effective than the money they are spending on it. You can also use the link they provide to find all the companies and products BP is involved in for boycotting purposes as well.

7. Google sells ads space (ad words & sponsored links). Entities buy ad space.
Edited on Mon Jun-07-10 09:13 PM by Statistical
Generally speaking it isn't called "bought off" when a company buys ad space.

This is Google ENTIRE business model. The one they do better than anyone else. This is how Google makes money.

Google doesn't care who buys the ad space they love competition because space is auctioned in realtime. When I entered "BP Oil Spill" looks like EDF had bought ad words (right side of screen) and had top bid

# Oil Spill in the Gulf
An ecological catastrophe looms.
Updates and what YOU can do.
http://EDF.org/oilspill

Is Google "selling out" to EDF?

The idea that Google would stop selling ads because you consider it getting "bought off" is kinda silly.
In related news ABC sold out to Coke. Their ads always show hot women and is misrepresents the product. There is no guarantee I will get laid is I buy a coke.

8. Thats a paid ad - anyone can do them - its not Google
That top hit with the yellow background is a PAID AD. It was not put there for any other reason than that BP paid to have it there. Anyone can pay to do this, not just BP.

Shame on Keith for not even knowing how Google Ads work.
