Progressives criticize White House, Democrats
Source: Associated Press

By PHILIP ELLIOTT (AP) – 5 hours ago

WASHINGTON — Progressive activists who helped elect Barack Obama president complained on Monday that the administration and congressional Democrats have been too timid and too willing to compromise.

Even though Obama's major first-term achievement — an overhaul of the nation's health care system — passed without a single Republican vote, progressive leaders who gathered in Washington criticized the president for failing to create a government-run insurance option to compete with private industry.

They faulted Obama for the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the slow pace in repealing the ban on gays serving in the military and last year's economic stimulus package, which they described as inadequate at $787 billion. They also criticized his handling of the Gulf oil spill.

"The White House has been an uncertain trumpet," said Robert Borosage, a co-director of the Campaign for America's Future, a progressive organization. "The administration's reforms were too often too timid from the start and too readily compromised along the way."

4. I am also a progressive
and I do think he has been too willing to compromise with republicans. He does not seem to understand that their only goal is to bring down his presidency. I appreciate all the may things he has accomplished but most of them have been done without any help from the other side so I have been very frustrated that he keeps talking about bipartisanship.

However, overall, I think he has done a great job, except for Afghanistan which I think may ruin a great presidency if he does not get out quickly.

7. Thank you
Too bad the OP hit piece didn't didn't contextualize what was being said.

But the activists who participated in the first three hours of the conference found that they were essentially in one camp, the mood of which was captured in words like those of Arianna Huffington, who said, "Hope is not enough ... We need a 'Hope 2.0'" that depends not on what President Obama or other politicians say or do but on what we as progressives do.

Wow ! what a novel concept....progressive actually getting off their asses and doing something other than spreading rightwing media spin. :evilfrown:

"It is not our job to make this president and this administration comfortable," Burner said, representing those more eager to challenge Obama. "It is to make this president and the administration do the right thing, even when it is uncomfortable."

Hmmm, "those more EAGER to challenge Obama." seems to indicate not all took that position. BTW, I consider Darcy a friend and a true progressive who will not appreciate the tone and deception of the headline.

Bhargava, himself a critic of Obama's stances on immigration and jobs policy, nonetheless offered positive words for an administration that he said "achieved much more in the last 18 months than progressives give ourselves credit for."

But Bhargava said that progressives can be faulted for not having a mass movement on the left that matches pound for pound the fervor of the "tea party" movement on the right and its ability to capture the attention of the mass media and the general public.

My my,,,,,

Burner said that based on what she has seen on Capitol Hill, "we are not advocating for our side in the way that the right is advocating for theirs." In many congressional offices "there are 10 Tea Party calls for every one of ours."

And that level of intensity changes the perception of that the political limits are, both agreed. Obama's natural inclination is to be a consensus builder, Burner said, but progressives have to ask themselves, "What choices are we giving him for building consensus?"

Wow...hard to understand the "consensus" implication of the headline or the placement (LBN) of this hit piece.

6. From what I remember
He threw the progressives under the bus trying to pass his "bipartisan" health reform. Again, the people who got him elected he threw under the bus to get his window dressing reform passed.
Oh, yeah and the financial reform,.....cough, cough, sucks, cough.
And that's the just the tip of the iceberg.

Timid..????...????

I can think of a whole lot more colorful words than "timid".

10. well, you seem to be admitting Obama is a joke
If all you can do is dangle out the prospect of someone even worse winning the presidency in 2012.

13. That's it exactly! .... NOT!
Obama is not a joke, I think he's in over his head. How can anyone be prepared for the multiple crises happening currently. Do I think he could have done better, hell yes. Bipartisanship, fine, cover it in bipartisanship. That is the way our gov. is supposed to work. Reality, no fucking way when it comes to the R's. I'm not a constitutional scholar but....wtf. Your they're bitch 24/7. So when it comes to bipartisanship, it's pretty much an admission for not getting anything done. Do I want someone worse in 2012, F*ck no! I want someone better! I DO Not Vote Against My Best Interests!
I Vote FOR My Daughter's Best Interest! That surpasses R's or D's, and it means Hyper Vigilance!

I want Obama to succeed, I really like him, but the ball's in his court and it's time for him to take a stand! Which is the complete opposite of what he's doing right now. He needs his base, it's time to take his foot out of his mouth and start listening and doing for the progressives. Anything else is his own doing and his own downfall.

11. Well, it's not surprising, but it's their own fault
The golden rule of politics is: Reward your friends, punish your enemies.

Republicans get this - when in power they stock every available federal seat with one of their buddies, and have no problem going after their own or anyone else for speaking ill of St Ronnie. But the Democrats don't seem to understand this principle, and I don't understand why. Time after time Obama & the Dems have not only failed to reward their allies, they've routinely thrown us under the bus in the name of "bipartisanship," a concept his opponents openly scoff at.

As a liberal & progressive, I'm tired of being told to sit down & shut up by the guys I voted for so they can appease the minority who lost in '08 & '06. It's getting annoying.
