Van der Sloot confesses to killing the woman in Peru
per MSNBC...

I suspect they will reopen the other case too, and the circus will once again begin.

Oh and if he did it... let him enjoy some Peruvian justice.

7. I disagree
Her parents worked hard to keep it in the news
It was an American that disappeared overseas
Even in other countries, like here in Korea, a missing person garners some attention. But, when they disappear in another country it gets vetted often

The suspect was the son of a federal judge which adds to the attention

22. I agree...It seems we have a counter movement here which says:
"If you are a blond woman, your murder is a yawn".

Disgusting.

28. That's not the case
Nearly everytime there is a disappearence or what not, the media heavily covers young, attractive, white women much more compared to cases where the missing person is of another ethnicity or male. Do you remember the difference in coverage between Jessica Lynch, Soshanna Johnson, and Lori Piestewa. There are countless examples of this.

There are thousands of missing person cases everyday in the US but who the media chooses to cover says a lot.

I think people who complain about this including myself don't think as you describe. They are complaining about a consistent pattern in the media to cover young, attractive, white women.

30. You may have a point concerning the "white" and the "blond"..but
the fact is, men are usually killed for "a reason"...Women are often attacked for the mere fact of BEING women.

31. If blond was the issue
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 04:42 PM by JonLP24
than Laci Peterson wouldn't of got any coverage.

I'm really not upset they don't cover cases of misfortune involving men, I do when it comes to lack of coverage of women of other ethnicities. I believe there may be a bit of class issue involved meaning the media is more likely to cover someone who is of upper middle class.

On edit-I don't mean any of this (I don't think anyone else is) is being anti-Natalee Halloway. I'm attacking the media for lack of coverage for other cases involving misfortanute that don't fit the description that I provided.

2. justice
whatever he did he has to be held accountable for. For this woman in Peru and if he killed Holloway her too. I know the Natalee Holloway case became a circus in the media etc, but she deserves justice and her family and friends deserve closure. Whatever issues we have with our media that young woman didn't deserve to die in Aruba, I always was sad about that.

14. My 18 YO daughter
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 04:26 AM by Control-Z
was missing during the same week as the Holloway girl. I was terrified, out of my mind with worry, until I learned that my daughter had made the choice to move out of the state - without telling me, or anyone else.

On her behalf, I have to include the fact that she was running - after months of stepping up to the role of sole legal authority for dealing with, pretty much alone, her father's fate after a fall and blow to his head that left him vegetative. The doctors were not kind, respectful, or helpful, due mostly to her age - nor was her father's family helpful in any way, choosing to selfishly walk away, leaving the burden on her.

As much as I wanted to be, I was of little help as I was legally denied access to her father (my ex husband) or any decision making on his behalf. She held it together for months, making what were the most heartbreaking of decisions even for a mature adult - until it turned into a Terri Shaivo situation, because of a feeding tube, when her decision making was called into question before an ethics board.

I've thought about this a lot, and had I not been the lucky one that week, and had been the one in Halloway's mother's position, you bet I would have screamed and hollered and demanded media attention, from where ever and whom ever I could.

I just wish people would stop discounting this young woman and her family because of hair color.

6. A certifiable asshole, but
does it really serve any good purpose for DU to cheer on prison violence?

It happens in every thread like this, and I really hate it; it's not clever, it's not original, it's not funny, and it's not progressive -- it's just awful and inhuman.

9. from my standpoint
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 01:21 AM by Wetzelbill
what I meant by justice is through the legal system. Not sure how others feel. I don't have any pity for the guy if he gets roughed up in prison or anything really, but I don't wish it on him. I just hope that whatever crimes he has committed that he gets the proper justice under the law.

11. If this guy was responsible for Natalie Holloway's death
then I hope a life sentence for the murder of this Peruvian woman will move him to come clean on what happened to Ms. Holloway.

25. Hi, malaise. Yeah, I'm hoping that, if his IS guilty of Holloway's death,
that the loss of any hope of freedom (or any chance of extradition to face justice in the US) may move him to surrender what he knows. Holloway's parents deserve an answer on this.

So I'm not so sure he's going to come clean regarding Natalee.

23. Aruban prisons operate under Dutch law --
which guarantees half a chicken for Sunday dinner -- and much more (I know the resauranteur who had the prison catering contract (!). Pretty cushy, very humane, actually.

Peruvian prison? Not so much.

Too bad for him.
