Does Bill Donohue, leader of the Catholic League, hate religion?
Catholic League president Bill Donohue questioned today whether Senator Barack Obama wants the U.S. to become a theocracy:

“If the same standard that was applied to President George W. Bush were to be applied to Senator Barack Obama, then Obama must be considered a theocrat who shows no respect for separation of church and state. What else is one to conclude after seeing a color photo of him today on the front page of the New York Times preaching from the pulpit of a Christian church? The article itself is even more indicting.

“Obama can begin his presidential campaign with ‘Giving all praise and honor to God,’ and it doesn’t raise an eyebrow among the guardians of church and state. But when Bush said that Jesus was his favorite philosopher, the guardians went ballistic. Indeed, Obama can compare himself to Joshua, and no one blinks.

...

“Yesterday, Obama blasted the Bush administration’s handling on the war in Iraq while preaching at a Christian church. Now imagine a pro-life Republican candidate speaking at a Catholic Church denouncing the Democrats for supporting partial-birth abortions. And imagine the reaction he would receive if there were a color photo of him on the front page of the New York Times speaking at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The double standard is nauseous, and it smacks of religious and racial prejudice.”

Shouldn't Bill be happy that a religious person is getting media attention? Or is Obama not of the 'right' religion?

Why does Bill Donohue hate God so much?

1. Donohue's favorite construct is "Play the victim"
He clearly learned a LOT on the playground as a kid. He repeats those lessons daily.

His arguments usually are:

"Well, THIS person can do it, but "I" can't?"

"So-and-so is MAKING FUN of me!!!"

"Look, LOOOOK at what THAT ONE is doing!!!! Quick, LOOOOOOK!!!!!!!"

And, last, but not least:

"I'm gonna TELL!!!!!!"

He's an ass. A disgrace to Catholics, Bostonians, Massachusettsians males and caucasians everywhere. He "represents" in the most hideous fashion.

3. He';s Archie Bunker On Crack!
It's amazing this bigot is able to spew the sexist, racist and anti-Semetic crap he does and the corporate media can't get enough of him.

5. He's a MEAN, unable-to-ever-atone, Archie on crack!!!

Hell, at least Archie could show an iota of occasional shame, and every once in a blue moon come to rapprochement with the Jefferson neighbors!

The media loves Donohue precisely for the reasons you describe--he's a Coultergeist. Lots of hate, fury and indignation...never a dull moment!

6. Ah Geez...ROFL

You tell me this doesn't look like an O'Donnahue rant.

The corporate media loves those who can spread major hate...and Dononhue brings the "full monte"...I can't think of a group he hasn't offended.

7. Just plain nuts.
I don't know why Catholics allow this nut case to represent them in public.

10. Who Exactly Does He Represent?
Not the hierarchy of the Church. Not the nice women I know who attend Catholic Church. Does Opus Dei give him backing or is he just one guy with fancy letterhead and a big mouth?

14. Thanks for the Link!
I see from the Media Matters comments that a lot of people think he doesn't represent many ordinary Catholics. The Catholic League's website claims 350,000 members but, of course, we only have their word for it. But their boards is a roll-call of 'the usual suspects' isn't it?

13. I don't think they approve of him. He does it on his own, with his own organization.
I guess I could forma an organization, call it something like "Catholic Women for America", and rant and rave against the conservatives. That wouldn't mean I represent the Catholic Church. Of course, If I rant and rave agaisnt conservatives, I'd never get invited on any TV shows.

16. He's using the name.
Ever hear of some Methodist's campaign to prevent the Bush library and think tank from being built on the campus of SMU? They don't want the Bush association tarnishing their religion, in perpetuity. They don't want him using their name to "polish his legacy" or legitimize the carnage and misery he has created. George Bush does not share their beliefs.

I've never heard of any Catholics trying to disassociate from Bill Donohue or denouncing him or asking him not to use their name although I can't say that it has never happened.

8. He is preeminent on my personal Always Ignore list.
Of all the people who I consider a waste of time, Bill Donohue is the highest. I wouldn't even stop to watch someone cross the street and piss on him while he was on fire.

He is the spawn of Louise Day Hicks.

11. How did this guy get elected to head the Catholic League, whatever
that is, and why aren't more Catholic's distancing themselves from him...

BTW, he does have a point...

I'm not all that comfortable with Obama wearing his religion on his sleeve even if it seems much more sincere than Boy George's spiritual choices...

I remember when people acknowledged their religion and then went on with it...

Saying god bless you after a political speech or preaching politics from a pulpit is, for me at least, using gods name in vein and if I remember correctly, that would be the third Commandment ...
