“I will paint the Mackinaw [sic] Bridge with the blood of you and your family members,”
A father-and-son team, reportedly angered over Representative Bart Stupak’s vote for the new health care overhaul, has been charged with threatening to injure the congressman and his family.

Russell Hesch, 73, and David Hesch, 50, have been charged with conspiring to threaten to assault, kidnap or murder a United States official, according to a release from the United States attorney’s office in the Eastern District of Michigan.

...

According to today’s release from the U.S. attorney’s office, the criminal complaint says that vote set off Russell Hesch, who lives in West Branch, Mich. The elder Hesch sent a letter vowing to harm Mr. Stupak and his family to his son David, who dispatched it to the congressman. (The younger Hesch lives in Loveland, Colo.)

The Detroit Free Press has posted a copy of the two-page letter, which accuses the congressman of, among other things, having “defecated on the very words of our constitution.” Signed “The Devil within Us,” the letter asks if Mr. Stupak and his family are prepared for the consequences of his vote.

“I will paint the Mackinaw Bridge with the blood of you and your family members,” the letter reads. “I will not say when and with who but I will save your blood for the high towers toward the end of this project.”

2. maybe the threats to his family affected his decision to not run again
I don't know of any other Member whose family received threats.

The Republican politicians, staffers, pundits and lobbyists who incited these maniacs to threaten violence over the past year are shameless and yet will never be held to account.

3. Wow.
Having lived in Michigan for a few years, I know that there are some pretty radical militia types in the northern section. But wow. Even in the worst years of the Bush debacle, I couldn't dream of such vitriole against the man.

Sorry to all you nice Michigan folks, I know that you are out there and outraged. This can't help the state's image though.

6. Probably alot
I open mail and answer phones at work and it never fails to amaze me at how nuts people are. They write nasty things, put gross stuff in envelopes, scream obscenities on the phone all because they received one advertising letter from my company. I remind myself daily that the answer is better mental illness treatment in this country.

5. Why are conservatives so insane and emotional - ever hear one on the radio?
They get themselves worked up into a red hot rant and then they just spew all this hate and name calling like a geyser when they get on the air. They don't even stop for a breath- just one long, run on sentence of madness and emotion.

If the host tries to say anything they just shout louder and never stop.

They are INSANE!!!

8. With those not familiar with Michigan's Upper Peninsula ...
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 02:00 PM by GeorgeGist
it's a desolate place. The economy is highly dependent on the sale of alcohol, gasoline, fishing and hunting supplies. There's not much there.

9. It's a great place to live if one loves the outdoors.
Swimming, camping, hunting, fishing, hiking, trail bike riding, snowshoeing, skiing, and outdoor photography are just some of the activities available here.
