I MEAN, WTF?
Edited on Tue Jun-08-10 04:49 PM by The Old Creak
Here we are day 50, 51, whatever, and no one has a clue about what is actually happening in the Gulf, much less what to do about it. First it was 5000 barrels a day, and now, what, 100,000 barrels a day? They tell us(both BP and the government), that the new "top hat" system is working, but I just looked at the video. This is what "working" looks like. And why are we dependent on BP to provide the footage? Where is our fucking government?

No plumes? Sorry, just kidding, there are plumes, but they're not very concentrated. Saw a prediction model earlier today that the oil MIGHT REACH MIAMI by June 10!!

There is also speculation that the line below the so-called BOP may be "torn". What the fuck does that mean, EXACTLY?

There are reports that BP is not allowing scientist to access the information they need in order to quantify the magnitude of the devastation.

WHY THE FUCK IS BP STILL IN CHARGE?

I feel it is the natural result of decades of growing corporate control over our entire political system. Its like we are living in The Matrix, its just corporations in charge, not machines. The one similarity is that neither has a heart or a conscious.

We are so fucked, and I am so pissed!

I posted a thread a few days ago that we are all, to some degree, complicit in this. Well, the responses I got certainly reminded me that there are levels of complicity. I, and a lot of others here, have tried to do some things to change our lifestyles and get people's attention as to what is happening.

Here is my sad conclusion: The war is over, and we lost.

:wtf: :wtf:

4. It's like BP is holding America hostage.
I thought our government was stronger than this. Why do we rehire them every 2 and/or 4 years if they cannot even protect us from a single company?

6. Yesterday I wrote this:
http://www.fourfreedomsblog.com/Blog.php?Act=ViewBlogPost&BlogID=1110

I won't post the text here, but it includes a link to an article that I read that resounded with me and also reflects on what you say regarding our complicity in this.

We can an should be outraged at this catastrophe, but it is more than fair to say that we as a Nation played a part in this disaster. I know that me and my husband have done what we can, but I often wonder, does it offset the folks who drive hummers or fail to recycle?

We have one vehicle. We use it only a few days a week. He commutes to work and I work from home. We have no children. We rent. We do more than that, and look for ways to do better, but at this point, I wonder if that offsets the family of 4 that has 3 cars, drives an SUV and doesn't recycle at all?

As I asked in my blog, I pray that we find a silver lining.

18. Here's where I am
"The bankers and the boards-men say "Relax, go to the mall"
But they've built a house of cards around us, and I fear its gonna fall

The politicians have all the answers, left and right
But the longer that they talk, darker grows the night

Let's strike a spark, baby
See if we can't make just a little light."

11. Why do you assume those (like me) who DO believe he's doing what he can,
think he's infallible? That's insulting and not giving us the right to have our own opinions unless they conform to your view of who we are.

16. FDR didn't have to deal with TV and 24/7 news. I suspect that
Obama knows the Gulf is totally fucked but can't say so in public yet. This isn't the dust bowl where the government could buy up cattle and have windbreaks planted.

12. Just after the spill started I had to trade in my 1997 Geo Metro
because it became too dangerous to drive after 13 years of commuting. I bought a car that gets even better mileage than it did. We live in a small house and keep the a/c set at 80 degrees. Sure, I am complicit, but not as complicit as the assholes who drove SUVs and set their thermostats at 72.

I looked into public transportation. If I took the earliest bus I would be two hours late for work. If I took the last bus home I could put in six hours instead of eight and be home by 7:30 p.m. instead of 5:15.

By the way, I suspect "torn" means "has a big fucking huge hole in it."

17. One more outrage: OSHA is relying on BP data to determine air is safe to breathe
Elizabeth reported here yesterday about the air monitoring results that OSHA has just released; they cover sampling performed at two beach cleanup locations and on board one vessel, and OSHA's conclusion was that data do not indicate workers "are being exposed to hazardous levels of substances or agents.

OSHA stated that its recommendations were based on BP data, and they may still be using BP data in addition to their own. Presumably, OSHA can get the raw data from BP and its contractors and judge whether the sampling protocols are adequate. Member of the public have to content themselves with visiting OSHA's website and accessing a BP summary report, which doesn't provide details on where and how air samples have been taken. The report states that "approximately 400 personal samples have been taken" and that personal monitoring is going on in three work areas. The BP report shows the number of benzene and hydrocarbon samples with results falling into different ranges, with none of the benzene samples falling below the action limit of 0.5ppm and none of the hydrocarbon samples reaching the VOC action limit of 100ppm. It does not show results for other substances.
