Some teabagger out side a True Value in Ohio just called me a Communist.
This was in Brunswick, OH on rt. 42. It's a locally owned store.

He was right there outside the front door with a card table. He was collecting signatures to exclude Ohio from HCR. I told him that was insane. Well he called Obama a communist and he called me a communist. He said Bush was better. To support his position he cited HCR and the GM bail-out. He denied that he also thinks Obama is a fascist. I noted how out of touch with reality he was saying he thinks anyone to the left of Goebbels is a communist and that would include Nixon and Reagan. I pointed out the new conservative PM in Britain believes in gay marriage and national health care. He pestered me about what I did for a living. I finally said I was a prosecutor which shut him up. (Really, I regret telling him anything about me.) He is in sales, which as I noted is irrelevant to the argument. I told him he was an idiot and left.

When I got home I called the store and talked to the manager on duty. I told him that guy called me and the president communists. I told him that was like calling someone a child molester. (Seriously, Stalin killed 5 million of his own people.) I asked if that guy was there with the owner's permission. He said the guy had the owner's permission so I told him I would be shopping at Sears in the future.

I used to go out of my way to shop there and patronize local businesses. I even overlooked the fact that the owners are Fundies because they were not too obvious about it in the store. Now, I wish they went out of business with all the other small businesses.

1. When he said bush was better, you should have asked him "how
are those bush tax cuts workin' for ya?"

15. I meant to the man outside
not to the owner.

Once it gets to the point where someone calls you communist, it seems to me there really isn't much more to say to that person that would be worth the time or effort. No matter what your argument is, it's not going to get through to him. Prosecutorial experience or not. :)

Instead of getting upset about it, in front of the guy, I was just saying he could have ended that part of the annoying experience and moved on to calling the owner, or whatever his next step would have been.

19. I know, but I really hate those people.
Selfish, ignorant and proud of it. And I know damn well that when they call him a communist or a nazi or a fascist or a muslim, what they really mean is he is not one of "us" because he's Black.

21. Of course he meant that.
And I know it's hard to let it pass.

But, as a fellow MSTie, I'll put it this way: When this happens the next time, ask yourself WWJD?

8. He pointed to HCR and the GM bailout as examples.
I noted that those were acts of Congress. I went on to note that what the public wanted was actually a lot more generous than what we got. He said that "everyone" had health care before the reform act. He noted anyone could go to an emergency room. I pointed out that they could only do that for emergencies and it was not the same as health care. I said the public wanted health care as a birthright. He said we don't have that right in this country (despite what he said moments before about E-rooms.) I told him if we got the law we wanted it would be a right.

Maybe he was sick of answering questions.

Besides, I really don't want to attract that kind of attention since I work for an elected D. official.

27. Called agents of the state for protection.
Which would be pretty embarrassing since I'm one of them. "Ah, Mr. DA, this is Sgt. Badge. We've got one of your prosecutors down here at the True Value...."

22. You should call the store in the morning and ask to speak with the owner-
Ask him if he provides healthcare for his what, maybe 10 employees. Then tell him you will be shopping at your local ACE Hardware from now on.

Often times things you tell the managers do not get passed on because they don't want to piss off their bosses. Let him know he just lost business.

"To argue with a man who has renounced his reason is like giving medicine to the dead."

Guarantee he wouldn't be able to respond to that or only say some yeah whatever it is your who has renounced reason.

What I should have said is, "You want to convince voters to accept exclusions for preexisting conditions, life-time limits and being dripped as soon as they get sick? Good luck with that."

29. Perspective: It's one guy with a card table
Obviously, you can't afford to be involved in a confrontation. The best you can do is what you did--engage him in a little discussion, and communicate your objections to the proprietor. If it's not considered a public free speech area, the guy could be forced to leave--but he'd probably just set up in another location.

Activists on the Left also are doing demonstration tables and petition drives. I'd be more disturbed if both sides weren't allowed to do that.

One positive thing to remember is that a recent poll indicated that the teabaggers are losing traction, especially with young people--where it really counts. By promoting his nutty ideas in public, your "friend" may even help accelerate the trend. :)

Anyway, I was more pissed off that he would immediately resort to name-calling rather than explaining his position.
